Michael Lucas Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 29, 2025.
Michael Lee Lucas, 68, passed away on August 26 at his home in Clearwater, Florida. A memorial service will be held at Harborside Chapel on September 26, 2025, at 1 p.m.

Mike was born in Greenup County, Kentucky, on July 7, 1957, to Ronald and Jean (Heaberlin) Lucas. He was a proud graduate of Greenup County High School and THE University of Kentucky (he'd want you to hear that in all caps).

Mike had two big dreams in life: to build a golf course and to live in Florida. The first came true in 1991, when he and his dad rolled up their sleeves and designed and built River Bend Golf Course in Argillite, Kentucky. With that dream checked off, he went after the second-and in 1994, he and his family packed up and headed south to Clearwater, Florida. After retiring in 2022, Mike was living the life he always imagined-soaking up the sunshine, playing golf, and enjoying every minute of his "golf paradise."

Mike didn't just live life-he filled it with joy, laughter, and faith. He poured himself into his church community: singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, leading the missions team, working with youth, and serving as an elder. He loved his God, his family, his friends, golf, and Kentucky basketball (not always in that order on game day).

If you ever heard Mike laugh, you never forgot it. He lit up every room he walked into, often with a joke or story that left everyone smiling. He had a gift for speaking from the heart-mixing encouragement with humor in a way that made people feel seen, loved, and inspired. Mike had a big heart for people, and he gathered friends everywhere he went. Helping others wasn't something he did now and then-it was simply who he was.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Ronald and Jean Lucas; his grandparents, Elmer and Maurine Heaberlin, Roma Lucas and Audrey Lucas Keaton; his in-laws, Robert and Edna Haight; his brother-in-law, David Haight, his uncles Elmer Heaberlin, Jr. and Bobby Lucas; his aunt Wilma Hearn; and his cousin Larry Ellis.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Rebecca Haight Lucas; his children, Chandra Sale and Aaron Lucas; his grandson, Cooper Sale; brothers-in-law, Roy (Patty) Haight and Dusty (Tena) Haight; sister-in-law, Susie Alvey (Barry Duncan); his aunts Kay Lucas and Ruth Heaberlin; his first cousins Cheryl Ellis, Tim (Kim) Heaberlin, and Mac (Rhonda) Heaberlin, Scott (Rebecca) Heaberlin, Lori Lucas, Lynda (Charles) Ison, David (Buffy) Lucas, and Heather (Nick) Hundley; and a whole host of nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him and were loved right back.

Friends and family are invited to help celebrate his life on September 26 at 1 pm.

I was so sad to hear of Mikes passing, my cousin Ralph May let me know. I met Mike back in the late 70´s. He was so much fun, had a great laugh and fun sense of humor. He loved to dance and wear funny hats when I knew him.
We always had fun. I remember when he and Ronnie opened the golf course he was so excited! I´m sorry I never got to meet his lovely family. My cousin Ralph has kept me up to date from time to time on your life in FL. I´m so sorry you´ve lost your husband, dad and grandad. I´m sure you have wonderful memories to comfort you. My condolences and prayers for your family.

God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

I first met Mike 2 years ago on the golf course at OTOW, his stories, his laughter, his wit , his love of family, all i will cherish. And yes he was a damn good golfer.

We met upon the green, where friendships bloom,
Through countless rounds, our bond did loom.
Though now you´ve left, for the course above,
We´ll always cherish, the friendship we wove.

In memory we´ll gather, at our favorite spot,
To share your stories, as they´ll ne´er be forgot.
And as we swing our clubs, we´ll think of you,
Teeing off in heaven, with skies so blue.

One day we´ll reunite, upon that distant shore,
To play eternal rounds, forevermore.
Until that day arrives, we´ll hold you dear,
Our friend and companion, forever near.

I was blessed to know and work with Mike for several years. He was a true Christian man who loved his family & friends with all he had. He was always available to help when needed and brought joy to all rooms he entered. He became my chosen brother and I will miss him until we meet again. May you rest in eternal peace.

Mike and Becky and Lorine and I became close during the last stages of his life. Mike and I shared a lot of stories about our involvement in church leadership. Played golf with Mike a couple of times he was a great golfer. Mike had a contagious laugh and a love for people. I was lucky to get to pray with him and some of his friends during his time sickness. Mike will be sadly missed. Mike will always be my friend, Dave Combs

I am so sorry to hear of Mike´s passing. A few months ago Kaye Lucas informed us of his condition. We have prayed for his healing. We did not see Kaye recently to see how is condition was. He was good friend through both elementary and high school and we lost all contact with him when he moved to Florida. We loved Ronnie and Jean as well. Ronnie was our baseball coach when we were just kids. We will support you with prayers in the coming days during this difficult time. Steve and Shawn Melvin of Wurtland, Kentucky.
