URBANA - Michael John Mahoney, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and dear friend, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday (May 5, 2023) at Ascension Resurrection hospital, Chicago, following a hard-fought battle to recover from a cardiac event earlier in the year.
He is survived by Nancy, his wife of over 48 years; his children, Jeff (Stacy), Brad (Kendra) and Heather (Keith); and six adoring grandchildren, Bailey (17), Isabel (15), Patrick (13), Meghan (13), Nora (11) and Kate (9).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Elnora, and brothers, Gene and Larry.
Mike was born in Seymour, Ind., on Aug. 13, 1946. Following a brief stint at Purdue University, he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1965. After an initial deployment in Japan, he moved to Rantoul and was later honorably discharged from the military in 1969. He sold insurance for several years after that, during which time he and Nancy met, and they eventually purchased and ran Mahoney Homes from 1976 to 1997, where he firmly established himself as the best salesman in the world. Mike became a successful part-time real-estate broker before officially retiring in 2019 to spend more time with his family and friends.
He was a 32nd-Degree Mason, a longtime member of the American and Canadian Legions, an avid golfer and proud member of the hole-in-one club, a very patient Cubs fan, and founder of the Loyal Order of the Brotherhood of Otters (LOBO, Est. 1986). Mike was larger than life, and he will be remembered for his ability to command a room and the joy and laughter he brought into the lives of everyone who knew him.
The family would like to thank all of those who helped and supported us these past few months. Masonic rites will be conducted by Western Star Lodge 240 A.F. and A.M., at 4:45 p.m. immediately preceding the visitation, which will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 11. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 12. The visitation and memorial service will be at Faith United Methodist Church, Champaign.
Flowers are welcome, or memorial contributions may also be made to the music program at Faith United Methodist Church. Condolences may be offered at morganmemorialhome.com.

I remember Mike as a formidable but fair competitor which could be rare in the MH business. Over the years we became friends and did some business together. Mike was always fun to be around, quick with a smile and a story. My condolences to family and friends.

There are so many GOOD memories of Mike.
And taking a golf trip with Mike was always entertaining. He had many, many, many stories, and several of them I heard on multiple occasions. If you don´t know Mike eagled the eighth hole at Willow Pond from 134 yards, you have played golf with him at the course. But you know what, it was still entertaining. You were never bored. His adventures with his buddy Durham, who I think was also a LOBO Founder are legendary. He would win trips to mobile home shows, and take Durham as his plus one. I´m not sure who was the instigator, but they were always seemed to have fun and mischief. And his story about his family were endearing and you could see how proud he was of his family. And I always had fun with Mike. He said he played golf, but I think he just wanted to play Murphy, SuperStar, and get into your pocket for winning bets, and kidding you about it. I feel fortunate to have been able to call Mike a friend and I will miss him dearly. John Geissal
