Dear Pat and family,
In 1994, while he was visiting close family, my 6 year old son Ryan was seriously injured in an outdoor, home accident in Hockessin. Mike was one of the paramedics who arrived at the call. Mike and his partner, Pete, later told me that Ryan was technically gone at the scene, but they performed a procedure that started his heart. They brought him to Christiana Hospital. My husband and I were home in Connecticut when we received a call from the hospital. Ryan was on life support, but not likely to survive for long. By the time we arrived, he was in the PICU and no one was sure if the extent of his injuries, and lack of oxygen to his brain, were survivable. Late that evening, a tall man wearing a big cowboy hat was standing by the doorway to Ryan’s ICU room. When I approached him, he introduced himself as Mike Marine. He held us, comforted us, cried a bit with us, and prayed for us. Ryan was in that room for 8 days. Mike and his partner, Pete, checked in on Ryan almost every one of those 8 days. One evening, Mike had a lovely couple from his church (perhaps the pastor and his wife?) join us and and we prayed together by Ryan’s bedside. It was so powerful and beautiful. They helped prepare us for the inevitable. I felt a warm healing presence there while the three of them supported us. I will never forget that night. Sadly, our Ryan did not survive his injuries and we brought him home for a funeral surrounded by the love and support of our many friends and family members. Ryan was a bright light in the lives of everyone who was fortunate enough to know him. I believe the same of Mike Marine. When I asked him how he was able to work a job that could be so difficult and emotionally demanding, he told me it was his faith that pulled him along, knowing he had a strong calling, and life purpose, in serving others. He was like a gentle, giant angel and I will never, ever forget his role in giving my husband and I the extra time we needed to say goodbye to our beautiful Ryan. Mike and I stayed in touch through his lovely wife, Pat, who would send me Christmas cards with good wishes and family updates, and pictures of the grandchildren they both loved so much. I looked forward to these sweet notes, and then would pray for his safety while asking for blessings upon him and his entire family. Yesterday would have been our Ryan’s 33rd birthday. It was yesterday that I learned of Mike’s passing. He was a true and trusted servant whom I hope knows how greatly appreciated he was in this world. Almost 27 years later, I see him meeting my Ryan, realizing that time is only in perspective, and planning together how much more helpful they can be from where they now live. I will forever keep Mike close in my heart and In my prayers. Thank you, Pat, for your kind words through the years. You are a very special and loving family. I pray for peace and the strength you’ll need to get through the challenge of this loss and seeing yourselves on the other side of the grief as soon as is possible. Thank you all for your service and kindness.

This is very sad news, he was taken way too soon! He was such a wonderful person and security guard at Christiana Hospital! We all enjoyed his walks through the halls with his beautiful dogs! He was a pleasure to know and I’m sure he is resting peacefully in Heaven!! My deepest condolences go out to his family!!

Mike was a good medic and great guy. Cherish every memory and know that Mike made a difference in this world.

Deepest Sympathy for your loss of Mike. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered always.

Heaven gained a great man. I knew Mike through K9 and we trained at Castle K9 together. Mike was an awesome man and a motivation to the younger guys. I enjoyed the 10 weeks of training together and our once a month meetings for detector training. R.I.P. Brother and may God bless your family that are most certainly hurting from their loss of such a great man.

Truly himself and willing to help, not only his patients, but his fellow paramedics and co-workers. Standup and openly honest he guided others to share and to give of themselves. We still miss you in EMS and the staff at Christiana remembers your strength in turmoil but your respect for life.
Thank you Mike, pray for us now that you've seen the face of God.

Truly one of the best. The world lost a great man.

Sorry for your family’s lost. I worked with Mike for 25 years as a nurse at CCHS. Always kind and caring. Was an asset to New Castle county as a paramedic and to CCHS as security officer. Will be missed by many.

Mike was a very good friend and coworker. He will be greatly missed by all the people he has touched in his life. May God bless his family.

Thank you Sir for the memories at Canal Little league. The letters "UMP" shaved into the back of his head and his presence on the field commanded respect for each other and to him. Rest easy UMP , thank you for the part you played in my life .
