Michael Miller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2024.
Michael Kade Miller, passed peacefully of natural causes at his home in Roseville, MN on August 4th, 2024. He was born in Ithaca, NY, the second of three sons, on July 5th, 1950. He spent his childhood having corn fights in the fields of Rohrerstown, PA and chasing chickens as an assistant at his father's veterinary practice.

Aiming to carve his own path that did not include veterinary work, Mike set off for Carleton College in Northfield, MN in 1968 where he made his closest lifelong friends and helped found the rugby program, an achievement in which he took much more pride than his English degree. After moving to Minneapolis and earning additional degrees in Geography and Computer Programming, he began a 30 year career coding mainframe computers. His greatest pride and accomplishment were his three children, who were daily reminded of his unconditional love and dedication. A love that was later expanded to include his four grandchildren, to whom he devoted much time and attention.

Mike was a proud citizen of his chosen state and city. He received multiple recognitions from Minneapolis Parks & Recreation Board for his decades of volunteering as a youth sports coach and mentor, most notably of the successful volleyball program at Van Cleve Park. He also spent many decades creating a lush garden plot at Dowling Community Gardens, from which he harvested countless bushels of tomatoes and peppers.

A lover of body surfing and naps in the sun, he traveled throughout the US, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic looking for the best beaches, with the best waves, and the best seafood options. His final years were spent close to home in devoted service to his aging sweetheart, their beloved dog, Cody, his volleyball teams, his garden, and to his children and grandchildren whom he never stopped helping. Mike Miller always showed up.

He is preceded in death by his parents Wilson and Barbara Miller. His infinite love and kindness will be sorely missed by his survivors: his brothers Dan and Tim; his sweetheart Elaine; his children Alex (Jenny), Vanessa, and Hannah (Dirk); and his grandchildren Mimi, Benny, Jojo, Cora, and one more on the way.

A memorial service will be held on 9/8/24 at Van Cleve Park 901 15th Ave SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414 from 2:00PM to 5:00PM.

When Mike joined m1 vb, I doubted if he should be a setter. He proved me wrong by getting better every time he played. Who says you can't teach an old man new tricks ( not that any of us did any teaching!) Deb

I am so sorry to be just now learning of the passing of my cousin, Mike! He was a great guy -- we stayed with him when my daughter O'Nell Starkey, was looking at and then attending (for one year) his alma mater, Carleton. (We east coasters had barely heard of the college!) My father, Robert, and Mike's mother, Barbara, were siblings. Kade is our grandmother's maiden name and my father's middle name, too. Mike showed us around the Minnesota State Fair in 2000 and it was so memorable, I revisited it on a cross-country trip a few years ago, but unfortunately we couldn't get together on that visit. I also remember watching Mike play rugby in an "old man's" match somewhere along the line - the one and only time I've seen the sport in person. Sounds like he affected so many people with his positivity and enthusiasm for life. Love you, Michael!! Condolences to Elaine and to his three children. He loved you all SO MUCH. xo Gail Mardin (used to be Starkey)

Coach Mike was already coaching his beloved 18U team when he heard that the 11U team didn't have a coach so he quickly jumped in to be their coach too. When the next year rolled around, he was hooked and he volunteered to be their 13U coach so he could keep on coaching them! :) His love for volleyball was contagious and his enthusiasm in seeing the girls improve was heart warming. And his end of season speeches? My favorite part of the year! Mike will be dearly missed by his Van Cleve Vipers family!

Mike coached my son to two Mpls Parks and Rec VB championships and greatly influenced his love of the sport. When my son got a team started at his high school, Mike showed up to several games and was just as invested in those boys winning as he was when he coached them at Van Cleve. One of a kind, Mike will be missed and remembered by a great many families!

This man sparked my love for volleyball, without him I would never have found a sport that I love.

What I will always remember about Mike was his great big smile, his infectious laugh, his love for his family, his Carleton friends and enthusiasm for sports. A kind, friendly, intelligent man that will be greatly missed. I am honored to have known him. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

So very sad to lose my Lancaster Pennsylvania connection. It was a delight to have him as a neighbor here in Minnesota and we could share Pennsylvania stories.
