Michael Rafferty Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 9 to May 10, 2006.
RAFFERTY, Michael (Mike) Albert Lieutenant-Colonel, BA, CD, PLog) Suddenly on Saturday, May 6, 2006 at the age of 58. Beloved husband of Leslie, and cherished father of Maggie. Much loved son of Bert and the late Margaret Rafferty of Winnipeg, and dear brother of Timothy and Patrick, also of Winnipeg. Dear son-in-law of Douglas and Margaret Littlewood, and brother-in-law to Jeffrey (Mary Jane) of Blenheim. Mike will be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews as well as his dear friends. Mike had proudly served in the Canadian Forces for 34 years, in Gimli, Comox, 1 Service Battalion in Calgary, The Airborne Regiment in Petawawa, The Canadian Forces School of Administration and Logistics in Borden, Parachute Maintenance Depot in Edmonton, 2 Service Battalion in Petawawa, in EUCOM HQ in Stuttgart and he was still serving in Ottawa at the time of his death. Mike was particularly proud of having been the Chief Petty Officer of RCSCC John Travers Cornwell V.C. in Winnipeg, and Commanding Officer of both the Canadian Forces Parachute Maintenance Depot in Edmonton and of 28 Service Battalion in Ottawa. A long time coach of girls' soccer in Cumberland, many will remember fondly the times they spent on the field with "Coach Mike." Mike was a devoted family man, an exemplary officer and a true friend. He will be greatly missed. Friends may pay their respects at the Kelly Funeral Home, 2370 St. Joseph Blvd in Orleans, Thursday, May 11th, from 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will take place on Friday, May 12th at 1 p.m., at the Holland Armouries, 2100 Walkley Road, Ottawa. In remembrance, donations to the Ottawa chapter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family. www.kellyfh.ca

I was shocked to hear of Mike`s passing and wish to offer my sincere condolences to his family. He is a highly respected friend whose memory always brings a smile. He will be sorely missed.

Mike worked hard and played hard and these, as well as his unshakeable loyalty are some of the traits, which earned him the respect of all who knew him.

“Airborne Mike” truly was a soldier`s soldier.

Fair winds and soft landings my Airborne brother.

Thank you to everyone that has showed us support. It is also so amazing to see that my dad really touched so many people. I know we will all miss him very much, he really was larger than life. Love you dad.

Leslie and Maggie,

Most sincere condolences on the loss of your husband, father and friend. Mike was also a true friend to many of us in the RCASC and Logistics Branch and he will be truly missed by all. Over my years of service I never had the pleasure of serving in the same unit as Mike at the same time. But we knew each other the way Army people do. He was a rare individual who combined his intelligence, talent, concern for others, moral compass and insight to make him unique.

He will be missed, but his guidance will be remembered. I hope that he saves a seat on the bus for the rest of us.

Sorry that I am so late with this. I was away and out of contact.

To the Rafferty Family;

I was shocked upon my return to Canada to learn of Mike's sudden passing. Mike was a great Logistics Officer and I learned much from him. Even though many years would pass between contact, Mike always knew where I was posted and what was happening. Mike's sense of humour always helped to keep things in perspective. My deepest sympathies to you on your loss. Mike will be missed

On behalf of myself, the officer's and soldiers of 21, 22 and 23 Svc Bn and the Comd and Staff at 31 CBG, our deepest condolences to the Rafferty Family.

Mike was a guiding light, a steller example of officership, a font of knowledge and a great friend to all he encountered. His sense of duty was only matched by his sense of humour. He taught us all to keep it fun.

OUR SINCERE CONDOLENCES TO LES AND FAMILY. THE TREMENDOUS TURN OUT FOR FRIDAY'S MEMORIAL SERVICE CAN ONLY IN A SMALL BUT MEANINGFUL WAY CONFIRM THE IMPACT MIKE HAD ON SO MANY OF OUR LIVES.

MIKE WAS A FINE OFFICER BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY A TREMENDOUS AND CARING PERSON. WE ALL LOVED HIM WHETHER WORKING FOR OR WITH HIM. IT SHOULD BE NO SMALL CONSOLATION TO US ALL THAT MIKE LIVED LIFE EACH AND EVERY DAY TO ITS FULLEST AND I DO NOT BELIEVE ANY ONE OF US COULD HAVE PUT MORE INTO IT OR GOTTEN MORE OUT OF IT. WE HAVE LOST A GREAT FRIEND AND OFFICER AT FAR TOO YOUNG AN AGE.

Sir

I don't know where to start. You have been a guiding force for me. All through my career at 28 Svc Bn you encouraged me and pushed me to be better than I am. Your support made the world of difference for me while I was trying to become a Naval Officer. You never gave up on me and I always appreciated those "How to be an Officer talks" I just wish I could have told you that in person. I always said if there was an Officer I wanted to be like it was you. I will do my best to live up to that in the Navy.

I will do my best and I hope in some way that will be a reflection on the principles I learned from you.

Mike was "military" from day one. In the attached photo, taken in 1963 when he was 15 years old, Mike's in his Sea Cadet uniform in preparation for a parade. He was in the Gun Crew (thus the belt and gaters) and there was nothing he liked better than to be pulling around HMCS Chippawa's big, old brass cannon and trailing amunition carrier. He eventually became the Gun Crew Leader (go figure) where he supervised the dismantling, reassembly, loading and firing of the cannon during parades and special ceremonies.

In reading some of the entries, I noticed that he's still remembered at Chippawa, a testament to the influence he had on the people around him.

Leslie & Maggie - what a great man you have lost and what a great guy the world is going to miss. His smile, that infectious laugh, those eyes that sparkled when he smiled, that trademark moustache and a sense of humour that made you want to be with him are part of what and how we will always fondly remember "Raff".

What fun tines we had: as Officer Cadets fighting the forest fire on Mary Hill, while at Venture (1968); making and firing the "tennis ball cannon" after the Mess Dinner in Calgary (1974); your getting extras as we tried to sneak past the CO (Dick Leech) after the Mess Dinner in Wainwright (1975); feeding that poor Brit officer's dog popcorn and exlax in the Strathcona's Mess (1975); and cutting off Maj Robbie Cuthbert's moustache (half - that is) at the Mess Dinner in Calgary (1975). Our careers followed different paths, but we remained in touch and always welcomed telling lies over a beer whenever we met up.

We will both miss you Dear Friend, but hopefully we will meet again and recall our glory days and tell more lies when next we meet.

For Leslie and Maggie,

My family and I were deeply saddened to hear of Mike's untimely passing. I will remember him best as the tough but personable Deputy Commanding Officer of 2 Service Battalion, in which I served as a subaltern from 1990 to 1993. I count myself extremely fortunate to have known him, as the fearless manner in which he supported his unit and his soldiers has served as an inspiration to me throughout my career. His dedication as a family man is without equal, his character exemplary, and his sense of humour legendary. We are all lessened by his loss.

For Mike - Fair winds and soft landings, Jumper. We'll see you at the RV.

Mike's great sense of humour and straight-shooter style really helped chill-out mine - and many others- conversion to the "DARK SIDE"... (CFSAL-early '80s). No small feat! I was amongst the many comission-shocked ex-CWO/MWOs who dragged their considerably deflated egos

through Borden those days.

Thanks for the memories Mike - and for easing the passage!

Mrs Rafferty,

I served with Mike in Calgary and then in Petawawa, and Mike was one of the good guy's. Quick to laugh and make a person comfortable, Mike was a valuable person to know as a friend. As a soldier he got the job done and had the respect of all who knew him, and served with him. In this trying time please acept my condolences to you and your daughter.

Leslie and Maggie, when I heard about Mike's passing last weekend I couldn't believe it. It is such a sad loss for the CF and the Logistics Branch but also for myself and my wife Maggie and of course for you and little Maggie. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and I know that Mike is rounding up the young soldiers and officers and passing on his wisdom and humour as I write. God bless Mike and know that we share your sorrow.

To Leslie and Maggie,

Mike was the type of soldier, officer and friend that most of us can only aspire to be. The true mark of a man is the sadness that attends his passing. The entries in this guest book attest to Mike's huge stature in that regard. The Trucker community, the Airborne family and the Army in general will miss his gravelly voice, his zany sense of humour, his honesty, his friendship and his professionalism. Would that there were more like him!

My deepest condolences to you both. Know and perhaps take a small measure of comfort in knowing that your sadness at Mike's passing is shared among many of his fellow soldiers and friends. God Bless you!

Mike, you have been manifested and you will jump, in accordance with all orders applicable to this chalk. Have a good one! Airborne!

My sincere condolences to you, Mike's loved ones.

I was another one of those young Truckers in the 80's who received their early training from Mike and looked to him as a role model, as much for his joie de vivre as his skill and devotion to his profession. I won't forget his big moustache, big smile and big heart. It was great to see him again as a familiar face and reassuring presence in Ottawa after I had been away from the "fold" for some years. We'll miss him.

My condolences to you and your family Leslie. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Mike's sudden passing. Like all those who knew him, that hearty laugh the huge smile with a mustache to match will be missed by all. I remember serving with Mike in the Airborne Regt, great days to be a soldier, especially for a soldier being lead by Mike. I can remember a time when he was standing atop an MOSV on the drop-zone in the dead of winter, with the platoon gathered round. We had just jumped in and there he was with the platoon gathered around. He was gesturing wildly praising our efforts inspiring us to greater things. I will always remember that sight, he always lead from the front, and always by example.

I was deeply saddened and shocked when I learned of Mike's untimely death. Mike has touched my life as a mentor and a friend over the past 3 decades, starting with his days as an instructor at CFSAL when he sauntered over to introduce himself to me in the Waterloo Mess and advised me, with a wicked smile on his lips and a gleam in his eye, that I would never pass the TN specialty course. I then had the honour to work for Mike in the mid 90s when he did a stint in HDHQ. He never lost sight of the mission and took care of his personnel, providing the young Jim Smith and I with a role model in that special NDHQ world of cubicles and silent elevators. Lately I crossed paths with MIke when he was with the Log Branch Secretariat and I was working the AMORs. He helped set everything up so it flowed seamlessly, and was there with a chuckle at the end of the day. A few weeks ago we exhanged e-mails, and I was sure we would continue to bump into each other every few years. Although I cannot make the funeral, I spoke to all the Truckers at 8 Wing today at TN's weekly coffee to explain how the Log Branch will be short one hell of a fine officer. From 8 Wing, rest well my friend, you and your family are in our prayers.

Mike Rafferty was a good man. I spent 2 very enjoyable summers at CFSAL (1979 and 1980) with Mike as my instructor. As young logisticans, he passed on to us many things; always be professional, strive to do your best, be a hands-on leader and get your hands dirty! And along the way, have a fabulous time.

His influence continued throughout the years and touched many of us. Thank you Mike - I am glad that our paths continued to meet.

Super soldier and a fine man, Mike was a close friend and trusted advisor. I first met Mike in Calgary where with his close bud Vern we had a wonderful time with a company that had extraordinary morale - the main reason of course "the Raff". He always gave more than he ever expected in return. A very tragic loss, my deepest condolences to Leslie and Maggie.

Leslie and Maggie,

My condolences to both of you. Although I know that nothing can make up for your loss, I hope that messages from all of Mike’s friends will help maintain his memory.

Mike was a one of the best liked officers in the logistics branch. He stood out as a character and in many cases a figure larger than life. I will always remember him as a great human being who was always willing to help a friend or even an acquaintance but above all I will remember Mike as an officer. I have served with Mike on several occasions over the past four decades and like everyone I know many “Rafferty Stories”. My favourite goes back to Mike’s days as a platoon commander in 1 Service Battalion when I was a brand new Lt looking for clues on what it took to be a good officer. One day during WainCon Mike went in to Wainwright to pick up supplies for the platoon canteen and someone stole the passenger door to his jeep. That night at DP orders Mike told his section commanders that his jeep door had been stolen and that if anyone saw a right side jeep door with his callsign on it he would like to get it back. We all knew that his soldiers liked and respected Mike but I don’t think that everyone knew just how much until the Log Brief next day. Mike was a bit shamefaced but I am sure that he was very proud when he had to explain to the CO why he had 28 jeep doors that the unit representatives could pick up after the meeting was over.

You can’t fool the soldiers and just like you they all loved Mike.

Leslie and Maggie, our deepest sympathy on your sad loss. Mike was a true professional - soldier, leader, teacher but most of all a friend. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by all.

May 11, 2006

I was profoundly saddened to hear today of Mike’s passing and want to extend my most sincere sympathy to his family. I was a student of his when he was Course Director on the Logistics Transportation Specialty Course, indirectly succeeded him in the Airborne Regiment’s Transport Officer appointment, and was his Deputy Commanding Officer when he commanded Movement Control Company on RV 85. I considered him a mentor and a role model for his leadership and people skills, as well as for his ever-present sense of humour. I greatly admired his enthusiasm for everything he took on, his ability to speak his mind, and that he never took himself too seriously – or anyone else for that matter.

I sincerely regret that I won’t be able to attend the memorial service, as I’m on duty in Afghanistan, but want his loved ones to know that he was a very positive influence in my life, and the lives of many of my military Trucker and Airborne colleagues, and he will be missed very much. Fair winds and soft landings, Mike.

Dear Leslie and family,

Mike guided me through my first steps in Transportation and inspired me to go Airborne. In the Mess, he was the first to join in when I sang the 'Alouette' song. He was inspirational and uncompromising as a professional; yet, he listened intently and sympathetically to my or anyone's 'There I was' story. Do you know many men who had such a hearthy, genuine laughter?

We are shocked by Mike's passing. As Jeff and I think of all the fond memories we have of Mike we both smile knowing he is surely smiling somewhere too. A specific memory comes to mind of Mike watering the flowers in his office when he was DCO 2 Svc Bn and if you were unfortunate enough to have to visit the CO for "tuning up", Mike would come out of his office while the young subaltern was waiting and ask "what are you here for" and then he would say "don't worry it's not that bad I've done worse... then he would present that larger than life smile and instantly put the young officer at ease. Mike's legacy for us will be " you must always have fun at what you are doing" and he lived his military life believing that. Thank you good friend for helping us Have Fun at what we are doing.

We will miss you and your larger than life smile.

When I first met him in 1975, he was a proud, Air Force transportation officer (MSEO) on the “hard-Army” base in Calgary (I remember his office wall covered with the blueprint of a ship upon which he was trying to fit all of 1CMBG’s vehicles so they could be transported to Norway in case the “balloon went up”). I was therefore somewhat shocked, when I next encountered him, to discover that he had gone through a personal re-incarnation into the most thoroughly gung-ho of all airborne Log (Tn) officers. Having thus learned of his capacity to evolve, it was no surprise to me, when we ran across each other again about 5 years ago, to learn he was taking over responsibility for coordination of the Log Branch’s administration upon his retirement from the Regular Forces and then, shortly thereafter, also becoming CO of 28 Svc Bn.

Throughout the 30 plus years I have known Mike (Raff), he has been a constant positive influence in my life and military career. I have never met a more energetic, exuberant and enthusiastic man, one whose unmistakable hearty laugh engendered joy and confidence in both his peers and his troops. His early departure is a shock to his many friends and his presence will be greatly missed. Goodbye old friend!

Leslie & family,

It was with great personal sadness that I learned of your tragic loss of Mike. He was a rare gem, filled with a love of life - and a more than average bit of mischief and fun - that he shared with the many whose lives he touched.

We first served together in Calgary and Egypt back in the 70s and I count him as one of my truest friends from our 30-plus years of personal and professional contact.

I know you sacrificed much of your time together to let him continue to serve the Logistics Branch, his units and the Canadian Forces for so many years, and you must know from the many responses here and elsewhere how valued that gift was.

Our thoughts and prayers have been with you both since we heard the sad news. It is difficult to express in words our sense of loss of such a wonderful man. He presented me with my first hook all those years ago and promoted Ron to Cpl just prior to our mariage in 1987(I remember him saying he had to promote Ron as I was already a Cpl and would boss him around too much if Ron remained a Pte.) His amazing sense of humour and his open personality that drew people to him. He has been there many times for both of us over the years providing advice, support and friendship and it is these memories we will treasure. Dear Leslie and Maggie,

Words are not adequate to express how deeply sorry we are for your great loss.

Mike was a pillar of support for my children and I throughout the almost two and a half years my husband commuted back and forth from Ottawa to Kingston, then Toronto. He encouraged me through quasi-single parenthood as well as my last year of Law school, Bar Ads, articling and the search for a job. Mike encouraged me to get out, to live, to enjoy life to the fullest and among other things, to rejoin the Militia. His friendship, support and encouragement never wavered even though at times things were very difficult for me.

I had just spoken to him last week. He was his cheerful, upbeat usual self and was enquiring, as he had done every week since last April 1st, as to how the girls and I were doing. As was always his way, he unconditionally offered me any help I might require and we promised to get together soon. I will never forget those words he spoke for Marc’s eulogy and I am forever thankful to him for always having been there for the girls and I…

Mike was a wonderful man and dear, dear friend who we will all sorely miss. He was truly one of the finest people I have ever had the privilege of knowing and his loss is immense.

Our most sincere condolences go out to all the family and friends to whom he was so dear.

Leslie and Maggie, you are in our thoughts and prayers every day. We are here for you in any way we can be.

Hopefully you will find comfort in that Mike touched many generations of logisticians in such a way that he will always be remembered as that model officer, one who worked hard, played hard and lived each day with passion, honour and happiness.

I too can't imagine what we would have been or what we will be without Mike Rafferty. May he rest in peace.

Leslie and Maggie:

My heart goes out to you on your loss of a remarkable husband, father and friend. Mike was, as the entries in this guest book attest, someone who was endowed with qualities and character above those one meets while trodding the paths of our daily existence.

Leslie, thank you for welcoming me into your home and allowing me to be a part of your wedding back in the early 80s, while I was an American exchange officer working with Mike at the Canadian Forces School of Administration and Logistics in Borden. The two years I spent there, thanks to the warmth, hospitality and genuineness of Mike, yourself, and other wonderful Canadians, made for times I shall always treasure.

May God Bless you.

Mike,

You will be missed. Your incredible sense of humour will make heaven a funnier place. There are few officers with whom I have served, that hold the esteem I held for you. Thank you for all your help, for your humour and for being a fine friend.

Lelsie,

I extend my sincerest condolences for your loss and pray that God will help you through the days ahead.

Please accept my deepest sympathy. Mike's and my paths have crossed for years and each time it was a pleasent experience, even if it was just a say a friendly hello in the flats of NDHQ. Mike was a fine officer and a good friend to all. He will be sadly missed.

Mike,

As a former Log Branch Advisor, I can't think of a single person who has contributed more to the Log Branch. Your professionalism, leadership and sense of humour are trademarks of what it takes to make a great officer. You have made a positive impact on more people than, I think, even you can appreciate. Farewell my friend, we will miss you dearly. Janet and I express our deepest concolences to Leslie and Maggie.

To Leslie and Maggie, we send our sincere condolences on your loss.

As you can see, Mike's passing has brought together a large community of family and friends to help share your pain.

Mike was every bit the superb military officer and great person that many have described in this Guest Book. He worked hard, played hard and got the job done. He was always positive, upbeat and had a ready smile for everyone. He was a true professional, respected by all who knew him. He was a good friend and a great person, who was taken far too early in life. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by all of us.

Cheryl and I shall raise a glass to Mike this evening and remember the many good times.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mike; as they are with you, his extended family and many friends.

My "picture" of Mike is a big moustache, a hearty laugh,a twinkle in the eye and always a helping thought or hand. We spent some good times together in a fine unit and he was always there to lead. I am glad I knew you - thnaks Mike

Hearing of Mike's passing was indeed a shock. I still fondly remember working with Mike in Calgary where he was the experienced Capt and I a very junior Lt. I also enjoyed our regular "repartee" here in Ottawa where he worked in the Log Secretariat and I within ADM Mat. I know that I will always smile when I remember his sense of humour and his joy of life.

Leslie;

To you, your daughter and your family, our most sincere condolences. Mike was the consumate professional logistician--a credit to the Logistics Branch and the Canadian Forces. His dedication and initiative participating in the rejuvenation of the Canadian Forces Logistics Association was outstanding. It was my pleasure to work alongside Mike in this endeavour. That he carried his love of the military and in particular his devotion to logistics is evident from his post retirement active participation with the army reserves and command of 28 (Ottawa) Service Battalion. And even after his outstanding service and support provided to the Logistics Branch Secretariat he still carried on with a Class B appointment, as always serving his country.

Mike, old winger, you have slipped your anchor and I now wish you fair winds and following seas.

Yours aye,

My deepest condolences to the rafferty family. I always knew him as "coach mike" spitting his sunflower seeds all over the field for soccer. I always felt somewhat close to him because he knew my family when i was a baby living in barrie. Mike was a light-hearted and good man. We will all miss him dearly.

What a terrible shock it was to hear of the passing of this man who was always so full of life and joy. He and Les invited James and me into their home and their lives, and meeting some of the many people who eagerly shared his company was always a treat. Leslie, I feel for you and your family and am just glad to know that you are surrounded by love and friends at this terrible time. My thoughts are with you.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Mike's sudden passing. Regrettably I didn't meet Mike until we worked on the 10th floor in the late 90's, and it was evident that he was a man of class! You will be missed by so many. Fair winds, following seas Mike on your next voyage.

I first met Mike Rafferty when in the early 80's, I was a student on BLOC and he was Directing Staff at CFSAL. He was real character, always full of fun and energy but with a deep sense of service. A true logistician. Keep on truckin! My deepest sympathy to Leslie and his family.

I find it difficult to express my feelings at the passing of Mike. He was one of my first instructors and I ended up working for him in Movement Control during RV 87. He had a keen sense of humour and sound family values. Cathy remembers the certificate he sent her while I was deployed which captioned “A soldiers life is a lonely job”. I had been talking with him a short time ago which makes this loss ever more current. My condolences to family, and a true loss for us all.

Mike has been one of those Officers who keeps popping into ones life. It has always been a pleasure. He and my brother Dave trained together in the late 60's when I first met Mike. He certainly loved life and lived it to the fullest. He has since become a mentor, a colleague, a roll model and a friend. He will be sorely missed by the Logistics Branch and the hundreds if not thousands upon whom he has had such a profound influence.
