Michael Rosen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 21 to Jun. 22, 2022.
Dr. Michael Henry Rosen, M.D., passed away on May 17, 2022 surrounded by loving family, after living with pancreatic cancer for two-and-a-half years. He was buried at Eretz HaChaim Cemetery in Beit Shemesh, Israel.

Dr. Rosen was born October 4, 1953 in Brooklyn, NY to Holocaust survivors Isaac and Sala (Lerman) Rosen, of blessed memory. He devoted his life to healing and supporting patients with cancer and related diseases; he received his MD from Einstein School of Medicine in 1979, followed by a hematology residency at Montefiore Hospital and a neo-plastics residency at Mount Sinai. Since 1986, Dr. Rosen was an essential member of the medical community in Springfield, MA, specializing in hematology/oncology first at Springfield Medical Associates for 26 years, and then for Pioneer Valley Oncology and Hematology until his illness brought on an early retirement in 2019. He was instrumental in bringing hospice to the Western Mass region, and he served as founding medical director of Baystate Hospice from 1988-2006, then as director of Mercy Hospice from 2014 until his diagnosis.

From his arrival in 1986, Dr. Rosen was a vital member of Springfield’s Jewish community, regularly attending services at Kodimoh Synagogue, Congregation B’nai Torah, and Lubavitcher Yeshiva Academy. He volunteered teaching classes, reading the Torah, and serving in the burial society (chevra kadisha). Among his friends, he was known for his encyclopedic knowledge of almost every subject, fluency with Jewish texts, his quick sarcastic wit, and his joie de vivre.

He achieved his lifelong dream of running the New York City Marathon at age 50. With the same strength of will, he walked miles almost daily throughout his illness; his last walk, two miles four days before his death.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Rona (Davis) Rosen; brother Allen Rosen; children Rebecca Neumeier, Gila Ogle, Shalom Rosen, Zvi Rosen, and Miri Rosen; and seven grandchildren. Donations in his memory may be made to Congregation B’nai Torah, Lubavitcher Yeshiva Academy, Mercy Hospital, and Beacon Hospice.

I recently moved back to Springfield from Florida. He's been a Dr. My favorite Dr. for many years. I'm so sorry for all of your losses, our losses. I'm just now finding out as I am sitting in a bed in Mercy Hospital with a pneumonia and severe migraine. I called office to find out He's gone. My deepest condolences to all family and loved ones. Your in my thoughts and prayers He was, in my eyes, a great person who did as much as he could to help people who were sick.

This is a late condolence but I just heard of Dr. Rozen's passing today. So sad that the medical field lost such a kind doctor. He treated me for Hodgkins Lymphoma 11
years ago. His expertise and calm, reassuring manner calmed my fears and I wish every cancer patient could have a doctor as knowledgeable and caring as Dr. Rosen. My heartfelt sympathy to his wife, daughters and family. I am forever grateful for his care.

My husband , son and I were so grateful for Dr Rosen´s care and compassion. He was always so positive and had a wonderful encouraging way with my husband. Although James passed away in March, my son and I know Dr. Rosen played a huge part extending his survival .

20 years ago, Dr. Rosen cured my Hodgkin's lymphoma. I was 20 years old and living in CT. I owe my life to him. I am a veterinarian in Cincinnati and actually think of him often, when I deal with cancer in dogs and cats. And he even influenced my bedside manner and how I am very patient with my owner clients/patients. I will forever remember him.

I am truly sorry to hear of Dr. Rosen passing. He diagnosed me at age 26 and was with me every step of the way. He made my cancer journey not as scary. I will forever be grateful for him and his team. He was an amazing doctor, and such a proud grandfather. He will be greatly missed.

I am saddened to just be hearing of Dr. Rosen´s passing. I worked with/for him for many years. He was always a fountain of information and I learned quite a bit from him. He was one of only a few doctors who would come up to the lab to chat or pass through and say hello on his way to fill up on his many cups of coffee. I know he´s probably somewhere eating some veggies or a salad. He was always pleasant. He cared about his patients and their well being. He was one of the good guys. He will be missed. Belated condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

My deepest sympathy to Doctor Rosen´s family. My brother David was his patient for many years. The doctor was always so optimistic and encouraging. Our whole family feels the doctors care helped David live a longer and fuller life than diagnosed. A true gift for us all. May you treasure his life well lived and know he was a wonderful healer.
May his memory be a blessing

I had the privilege of working with Dr. Rosen for 10 years. He was such a great person. Cared about everyone and was always smiling. The medical community has certainly lost a gem.

Dr. Rosen was the kindest man and doctor I ever had the pleasure to know. Even though I was not a patient, I enjoyed his stories and humor. My son, Jacob Parker, was one of his medical assistants. Dr. Rosen guided him to reach for his goals in achieving his Bachelors degree and now working towards his Masters. I was the Christmas cookie lady. I have given him cookies for a number of Christmas'. I know that he enjoyed them and not quite sure if he shared them with the family. Dr. Rosen will surely be missed by me and the entire community that he served.
