I am sorry to read that Mr. Baker has passed away. I was one of his secretaries when he came to Powell Valley High School. Just like the obituary stated, he was always a kind man with an incredible sense of humor. He bought the airstream and parked it behind the school. I told him that he did that to make us jealous and of course he laughed. The family will be in my prayers.

I had to have been one of Mike Baker’s original students in the beginning of his teaching career in Washington. Can’t recall the grade or even the subject but I always liked him. Ran into him several times in the past 50 years and he always remembered me. He was a great teacher, coach and mentor to many people.

I have fond memories of Mr. and Mrs. Baker. Mike and Jane moved next door to us in Washington Park in the mid 70s, when I was a teenager. There was an immediate connection with Mike and my dad Bo Bowen, as well as between Jane and my mom. Mr. Baker had kind eyes, gentle hands, and a giving spirit. Our families camped together for many years. And it’s because of Mr. Baker’s (as well as Jane’s) generosity, that my parents were able to travel with them to England in the latter years of their lives-a bucket list adventure for my parents. To Jane, Mike’s sister, his children and grandchildren, may the Lord keep you in the palm of his hands as you remember and grief the loss of a man that had such an impact on so many, young and old.

Mike was my teacher and coach at PS Jones. He simultaneously knew how to push and support us as students and athletes. I especially enjoyed reconnecting with Mike and Jane in Bath over the past 8 years. Often while my wife and I walked Main Street he hailed us from his porch, offering words of welcome and encouragement, always with a smile on his face. He fought his battle against heart failure with courage and grace that will teach us a final lesson. Prayers for Jane and the family. His friendship, smile and wave will be missed.

So sad that the world has lost such a sweet soul. A big smile for one and all. Well maybe a frown or two, every now and then, during a school year.( Yes sir, I know the phone number for the Bayview Golf Club.) ❤

Baker Family,
Coach Baker had a positive impact on countless Beaufort County kids, and I am thankful to say I was one of them. His wit and wisdom was golden.
For those of us fortunate enough to have played hoops for him, we became exposed to a wonderful coach who knew his stuff! He pushed us and had high expectations for our team on and off the court. Having a positive impact on his players is a small part of his legacy.
Peace and providence.

Baker family, Mike was a special person to everyone he came into contact with. What a glorious life he lived; he loved life and lived it to the fullest....everyday. He was so proud of his family, and he loved Jane more than can even be described. May each of you feel " the peace that passes all understanding" during this difficult time. We will always smile when we think of Mike; his smile was contagious, and his life was an example for all to follow. Every blade in the field, every leaf in the forest lays down life in its season as beautifully as it was taken up." Bless each of you... Gordon and Lisa Davis
