Michael Saeger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 23, 2025.
With the deepest sorrow, we announce the passing of Michael Roland ("Mike") Saeger, who peacefully departed from this life on July 18, 2025, at the age of 77. Michael was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

Born in Fremont, Nebraska, on February 17, 1948, Michael was the son of the late Warren and Darlene Saeger. He graduated from Grinnell College in Iowa with a bachelor's degree in history in 1970, and went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Northwestern University in Chicago in 1973. Michael never stopped learning, taking classes in Ancient Greek in the 1980s and graduating with a master's degree in computer science from the University of Saint Thomas in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 2001.

On the same day he graduated from Grinnell, he married the former Mary Ellen Ruvelson. After law school, Michael and Mary Ellen moved to her home town of Saint Paul, Minnesota, where they had two sons, Charles and Nicholas. Michael instilled into his sons his love of learning and unique sense of humor, and raised them himself after Mary Ellen's death in 1987.

As an attorney, Michael worked for the Attorney General's Office of the State of Minnesota on two occasions, as well as the Kandiyohi County District Attorney's office in Willmar, Minnesota, Burlington Northern Railroad in Saint Paul, and his own private practice. Late in life, Michael developed applications using FileMaker Pro for other attorneys.

Michael was a man of considerable wit to go along with his sharp mind and caring soul. He avidly played contract bridge, participated in pilates, followed Nebraska football, discussed the Great Books, and played the piano, the last much to the pleasure of his neighbors. He enjoyed spending time gardening at his home, often getting help from his granddaughters, Hannah and Sophia.

Michael is survived by his sons, Chuck (Candy) and Nick (Erika), granddaughters Hannah and Sophia, brothers Bill (Cathy) and Jeff (Linda), and many close friends, among them Susan O'Connor, Gary (Gail) Karger, and Luddene Perry.

A private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Cancer Society or Gilda's Club in Michael's or his late wife Mary Ellen's name.

I am sorry to see Michael´s obituary. I remember him because of Mary Ellen. I was a nurse at the U and one of Mary Ellen´s primary nurses. She is someone I still think of today as one of my favorite patients. She went thru a lot and we shared a lot. She was a brave fighter and wasn´t afraid to ask for what she needed. She loved her family and I´ m sure would have been thrilled with her grandchildren. My sympathy to you
Sincerely Heather Rykhus

Through thick and thin you always had my back, Mike, even when I didn't realize it. I'm glad you loved me, as well as Candy and the girls. Love you, Mike, and I'm already missing the hell out of you.
