Mike, you were a senior when I was a freshman in Lamesa High School. My husband and I attended a reunion for all the Lamesa people, who lived in the area, at your home in Highland Park in the early 70s.
When I heard of your son's death, I could not imagine the heartache you are going through. Although I never met your son, as an adult, I know he was the sweet, caring man all his friends have described. What a great role model you must have been as his father.
May God bless you and every member of Mike's family.

My heart and soul go out to the Schmidt family. Mike and I met when were kids out in Lamesa, Texas. Our fathers past away about a year a part in the mid 1950's. Mike and I have been as close friends as any two people can be to this day.

Again, my heart and soul go out to all of the Schmidt's. There are few folks in this world like those people.

I wish I could express my sorrow for that family.

I could always sense the love and respect you a had for him. Take time to just fall into his arms because your precious son is now in his arms too

I met MIchael many years ago on a case after I was referred to him which he declined because he felt he was not knowledgeable enough about the particular nuances of the referral. He had just had another child with his wife and was very excited about his children and much of our meeting was spent talking about how much he loved being a father and I remembered thinking what lucky children. I then got sucked into the Dallas sea of legal morass which literally consumed the lives of myself and my children for many years. In fact we became indigent from legal fees and were for several very long, painful years.

As I was mocked and laughed and ridiculed by my ex's wealthy family and hyenna lawyers lying on cue because they knew no one would read the facts and the file of the case, one of the few people who would still speak to me, and to my children, was Mike when we had the rare occasion to run into him in public around the various kids activities. Always offered to help but I was so beaten down I could never have even articulated the nightmare our family case had become. I wasn't sure he even remembered my name, just a friendly hi and never asked for anything in return, was just willing to listen. Just being nice to my children and me, and acknowledging my children when others considered all of us pariahs, and offering to help what was really a total stranger, given we had only had one meeting, if we needed it was a lifeline most will never understand.

One day I came home and in my mailbox was an envelope with some cash and a note that said, "“He knows not his own strength who hath not met adversity," and to please pay it forward when I made it back. There was a water disconnect on my door because I was so broke. There was no identification on the note but this was the quote that Mike had said to me when I met him at that meeting years ago. I always wondered if it was he who had someone put it in our mailbox, the acts of kindness that most people don't think about these days. I am ashamed to say I was too embarrassed to call and ask.

This was a good man who did not deserve this tragedy, and I am very sorry for his family that he has passed. I just wanted to share this experience we personally had so people will know this was a good man who was willing to help a total stranger with nothing asked for in return. And I hope others follow his acts of random kindness as a tribute to who the person we met was.

Michael and I were opposing counsel in a personal injury case in Denton County in early 1997. I remember being received so graciously in his office during depositions, meeting his dad, and shaking hands after the jury verdict in the old Denton County courts parking lot. He was kind, classy, and smart. Couldn't help but like the guy. So sorry to his beautiful family for your loss.

Mike, I am deeply saddened to learn of this heartbreak there are just no words to express my sorrow for your loss. Michael was a wonderful man whom I was privileged to know and work with him. He will be missed dearly. My prayers go up for you and your loved ones.

I initially saw a posting from a mutual friend on Facebook, and while I haven't seen Mike since we were at camp together at Blue Mountain Ranch in 1978...I instantly knew who it was. I think that speaks well to the impression he made on me...even as young kids. I never forgot him, and he will never be forgotten I'm certain. My prayers are for peace and comfort for his entire family at this difficult time. Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

I am deeply saddened to learn of this heartbreak. "Mikey" was indeed a great and gentle man with a keen intellect that was only exceeded by a heart and humor as big as Texas. I was honored to have been a member of the Schmidt Firm family as a paralegal in the 1990s and my heart and prayers go out to Big Mike and the whole family. May God comfort you knowing Michael touched so many lives for the better, mine included.

I am extremely saddened by the news of Mike's passing. We attended law school together and his name will always bring to mind a gentle and caring soul who had a heart of gold. Mike always had a smile and a word of encouragement for everyone he encountered. I am so blessed to have had the gift of his friendship. I hope you are able to take some comfort in the fact that he was such a positive influence in so many lives. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Met Mike's dad in the 1960s when I went to work for Don Case at Jackson Walker. Am certain Mike acquired his traits from his father who was a very distinguished and charismatic attorney and gentleman. My heart and prayers go out to the entire family. This is such a loss, and much too soon.

Met Mike's dad prior to going to work for Don Case at Jackson Walker in
the 1960s. His father was a distinguished attorney, charismatic and always
such a gentleman, traits I am certain taught to Mike by his parents. This is such a loss; he's gone too soon, and my thoughts and prayers are with the

Michael and his father hired me for my first "real" job as an attorney fresh out of law school. I could not find any better mentors and friends than I found at the Schmidt Firm. Michael was one of the kindest, caring, most loving persons I have ever known. He was a great friend to me over the years and I will truly miss his funny sense of humor, his smile and his wisdom. God Bless the Schmidt and McMordie families as well as his Schmidt Firm family.

I echo Mary Alice's thoughts. Michael was such a great friend and fun loving person. Any time he was around you could be certain that laughs would soon follow. TTLA trips were not the same if Mike was not around. He will be forever missed.

I cannot even begin to imagine the depth of your loss. My heart felt condolences are with all of your family and you will remain in my thoughts and prayers.

To the Schmidt family,
I am so sorry for your loss of this beautiful man. He was a dear friend to me and so many other trial lawyers in town. Michael brought a special joy and fun to our activities. He was the "surfer dude" as he rode on the side of the boat on our snorkeling trips. He was always there for me to help me in many ways after my husband died. He would bring sunshine into my bleak grief. His love of his family, friends and clients was enormous. We will miss him so much.

Love to Mike and the Schmidt family,
Mary Alice
