Sperl, Michael P., Jr. Age 87, of Richfield, Minnesota, died peacefully in his sleep on March 4, 2013. Preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite (Peggy) Studer; and parents, Michael Sperl, Sr. and Marie Sperl. Survived by siblings, Robert Sperl of St. Paul, and Mary Catherine Sperl (Geoff Olson) of Roseville; daughter, Peggy Willett (Brian), Megan and Benjamin of Grant; son, Michael Sperl III, Liam, Gabriel, Simon and Athyn of Menomonie; and daughter, Julianne Johnson (Don) of St. Francis. Michael was born in St. Paul, attended Cretin High School, and college and medical school at the University of Minnesota. He served as a Navy medical doctor and then completed a residency in neurosurgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Michael practiced neurosurgery in St. Paul until his retirement in 1984. He enjoyed sailing and spent many happy hours with his family on the St. Croix River, Rainy Lake and Lake Menomonie. Michael liked building and programming computers, and taught computer skills to other seniors at the Richfield community center. Memorial service 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 9th at Willwerscheid Funeral Home, 1167 Grand Avenue, St. Paul. A luncheon will follow the service. Memorial contributions to the Mayo Clinic are welcome in lieu of flowers. Willwerscheid Funeral Home & Cremation Service 651-228-1006

Mike Sperl was a generous and special man. He educated us and donated hours of time and skill to the members of HYHO Computer Group in Richfield. We will always be grateful for the time and knowledge he shared with us. We'll miss you Mike.

I had the opportunity to watch Dr. Sperl perform surgery when I worked at the newly formed United Hospitals in the early 1970's. Later, after a severe spinal injury, he was my surgeon for two difficult procedures. I am able to walk today because of his abilities. My post-surgical visits often ended with discussions about sailing. He was a great surgeon and an even greater person.

I am very sorry about your loved one Mike Sperl's death.

My name is Arthur (Art) Sauter. My mother's mother was Bertha Studer Richtsmeier. I got to know Peggy at Studer reunions (Joseph Studer lineage) in Sartell MN quite a number of years ago now. Although I didn't know her very well Peggy kept me up to date on Studer happenings (usually deaths I'm afraid) and we always exchange Christmas greetings. I was so pleased to see her when she attended my mother's funeral in October 03. Her father Dr. Donald Studer often would stop to see my mom when he was in Minneapolis on a trip to or from Alexandria MN.

I'm sorry to say I never minutes Mike. I did, however, talk to him on the phone occasionally when I called to speak with Peggy.

I am sorry for your loss. Your in my thoughts.

Uncle Mike was my godfather. He was the first person our parents would call if they were worried we were sick. He was a very big presence in our family; smart, confident, the first born son. Our dad always said he was the best older brother anyone could ever have. We will remember him with humor and fondness. Bridget Sperl
