I just became aware of Mike's death today and this weighs heavily. A good man gone too soon. I first met Mike in 1991 when assigned to the Army Pulse Radiation Facility. We were both still fairly junior in our chosen professions. He was a great colleague...competent, energetic, reliable, a good guy to talk to. My condolences to Katherine -- please know that Mike will be remembered in prayer.

I remember conversations with Michael talking about his family and his parents. These conversations are memorable because of the special and emotional way he talked about his family, especially his bond with his father. You will be missed, Michael, for your many fine qualities and humor.

I found out about Michael's passing from a good mutual friend. Michael was one of the first people I met when I moved to Maryland in 2005. Since we had a Michigan connection we became fast friends. I pray for solace for his family. I know he is in a better place now.

Last year Michael was given a critical role for how the Army was going to change. Without skipping a beat he immediately delegated that to me and Im not sure I have ever been trusted that implicitly in my entire life. He always checked in on us to make sure we were doing ok in our personal and professional lives even after we had moved on. Michael was a great man, a great friend, and a great example of what the world needs. I will miss him dearly.

We've lost a tremendous human being and the heaven's gained one special soul with your passing, Michael. You gave your all to helping people, whether it was your CCDC teammates, friends or family. Your incredible smarts, loyalty, candor and great sense of humor are what I'll miss about you. May your family find peace and strength in the special memories of you as a husband and father. Rest easy knowing you ran the good race and fought the good fight. May God bless the Stanka family.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Michael was such a good man. He was such a pleasure to work with while I was at Army Materiel Command and as I moved to Army Futures Command in Austin. He did so much for Soldiers but also helped his team and the people he worked with every day. His passion and dedication to the Army and his job will be missed but most of all we will miss the man. He was a true gentleman and a bright light to all.

My deepest sympathies to the Stanka family. I had worked for Michael for many years and enjoyed knowing him as a professional and as a friend. My memories of him include: his sense of humor and how he would always exude a boyish grin just before telling a funny story or punchline; his enjoyment of explaining quantum physics theory and formulas and stories about his greatest teachers; his love of good Scotch, the Spartans and the movie Margin Call; and, how he was always quick to correct anyone who called him Mike by proudly saying My mother named me Michael.

God bless those who knew him, loved him, or had the pleasure of his company. I will miss him.

Michael's civil service was impeccable. He was very committed to ensuring that the US Army had the best technology and was instrumental in shaping the science and technology planning process. We did not only lose a beloved colleague, we lost a friend, a great father and husband. On behalf of the Army Futures Command, wishing his family peace and courage to face the days ahead.
