8 years ago today was the last time I saw Michael. I wish I knew that was the last time I would hug him, hear his laugh, and be in his presence. I met Michael when we were 12 years old. He was my closest friend. I hold all my memories with Michael in the deepest part of my heart. I miss him greatly and forever love him.

Announcement posted on NMHA website.
It was with deep regret and shock that the NMHA learned of the sudden passing of a former player, Michael Swan, on Monday, Feb. 22. Michael played in Nepean for about 10 years from Initiation to Midget, in the House and Competitive Programs. He leaves behind his parents, Dale and Rea and his older brother Alex, a great family and a credit to the NMHA. Michael was an exceptional athlete, well-liked by his coaches and peers. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

Eulogy Delivered at St. Patrick's Church February 27th 2010
Good morning everyone, first off thank you all for being here today, the outpouring of support from all of Michaels family and friends has truly been amazing. I’ve never seen such a display of family, friendship and community as had this past week, it means the world to see all of you here today not only for myself but also for my family, so from the bottom of my heart thank you.
Let’s make today a day to celebrate the life of my brother Michael Swan, he may be gone but he will never be forgotten.
Michael loved life, he loved his friends and he loved his family, he would do anything for anyone, he was gentle, kind, caring, energetic and the most genuine person I know.
Seeing all of Michael’s friends here this week was a real eye opener for me, you guys truly are a testament to Mike’s everlasting spirit. Please be there for each other and keep him in your hearts, he loved everyone of you.
Mike brought a smile to everyone’s face, he was the type of person that if you were in a room looking lonely he would find you and make sure you were ok, he was always looking out for others around him, he put everyone else first. Michael’s smile and his laugh were contagious; if there’s one thing Mike could do it was make you laugh.
He was a giving friend a loving brother, a truly kind individual, he loved all his little cousins, he would play with them for hours when they came by the house, he was really good with children and like his father would have done an outstanding job raising a family.
He loved animals, from the moment Mike and Kaitlin got those little puppies I knew Mike was going to make a great father to Vito and Biggie, they were his babies, and he took care of those dogs better than you could imagine.
Mike was a natural athlete, he excelled in every sport he played, from soccer to lacrosse to his passion for hockey it was truly unbelievable. He was so fortunate to meet so many good friends from all the teams he played for, all the games and tournaments brought you guys so close together and I hope the time you spent
with Mike brings back some happy memories.
One thing we will never get to see is how much of a success this young man could have been, he was full of potential, he would have been good at anything he pursued, he had a strong work ethic and showed great responsibility for a kid of his age. He did so much and touched so many people’s lives in the short time he was here.
It breaks my heart to wonder how many more good things he had left to do, how many more people could have had the privilege to meet my little brother. You can never be replaced and are truly one of a kind.
It seems like only yesterday when we’d wake up early on Saturday mornings, you’d come into room and we built forts in my bed while watching cartoons, it was a simpler time and no one can ever take away the memories I have for you.
To Kaitlyn, if there’s one thing I know for sure is that my brother loved you unconditionally, he would do anything for you and you will forever be part of our family. We love you.
To my Mom and Dad, despite whatever happens we too will always be a family, sometimes the dynamics change but we will forever one with our lost boy.
We don’t have too many rituals at our house but one thing that was important to us is that we all made time for our Sunday dinner, it was important to our family that we at least take a few hours each week to sit together as a family. Every Sunday night Mike would
be at the house for dinner, he never missed a single day; Mike always made time to be with his family, there’s nothing I’m going to miss more than spending these times together with them.
My parents and I were talking last night before going to bed, and my dad had said that (all this) was Mike’s parting gift to his family and friends, that we all could get together, be in each others company and share time with the people we most love and care for. I think that is the greatest gift of all spending time with the people you love the most, so Michael I want to thank you for bringing us all together so that we may celebrate your life with everyone here today.
Michael you’ll always be my little brother, I miss you, I love you and I know someday I’ll see you again.

We worked together in the late 70s and have seen each other from time to time over the years in Barrhaven. My son Connor was a friend of Mike's - as a parent, I cannot imagine the turmoil your must be going through. Be strong and remember the almost 20 wonderful years you were blessed to have your son. My sympathies, prayers and heartfelt condolences to you and your family at this difficult time. God Bless you all.

Rea, Dale and Alex,
My heart was in my throat at the wake and funeral, seeing your sorrow and that of so many people from among your family and friends. My memories of Michael are from age 3 to about 9 when he was best friends with my son Glen. Michael was like one of the family at our house. He certainly never bored anyone with a lot of idle chit chat, but there was always something going on behind that adorable little face and those gorgeous dark eyes. I remember how ecstatic I was when somehow Glen got put back at the top of the waiting list so he could go to nursery school with Michael at Mary Honeywell School. What a cute and impish pair they made. Michael is in heaven now, but while he was in this world he was lucky enough to have an outstanding mom and dad, and a brother whom he could truly look up to. I will think of him often.

To the Swan family, Kaitlyn, Tyler and to all of Mike's friends.
My heart is heavy at this time of your incredible loss.
Last night I was deeply saddened, yet positively touched to see so many of Mike's friends at the wake. All coming together to share their confusion and grief, and perhaps more importantly to give each other support at such a surreal and emotionally confusing time. I didn't know Mike that well, but my daughter Claire did. She always spoke very highly of him - mostly of his good humor, positive attitude and his loyalty to his friends.
Last night I was humbled and reminded just how incredibly important our children are, and how proud I am of all of Mike's friends last night. They were all so generous with their hearts as they were trying their best to make sense at a time or sorrow.
My deepest and most sincere condolences.

"Together we will stand and divided we will fall." If anyone followed that quote it was Mike. He was an amazing friend who helped to keep us all together through all the good and bad times over the years. Its hard to believe that he has been taken from us in such a way, but I know if he was here he would want us all to stay strong together. My prayers are with the Swan family and also with Kaitlyn and her family. He will always be smiling down on us and we will never forget the way he touched our hearts
Rest in peace Swanny <3

Dear Dale, Rea and Alex
We are truly saddened by Michael's death. From what we have read and been told Mike was more than just a son, brother and friend; he was an amazing person. Many people have commented on what a kind and considerate young man Mike was and how they were blessed to have known him. I believe they are thank full that you were able to give them the gift of Mike. He enriched their lives and such a wonderful gift is hard to find.
His passing will not only leave a void in your lives, but will leave a void in the hearts of everyone who knew him. Michael's memory will always remain deep within our hearts.
