Michael Taylor Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 12 to Dec. 15, 2022.
Michael Albert Taylor, beloved husband, father, brother, son, uncle, and friend, passed away on Friday, December 2, 2022 at the age of 69.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his wife, four children and his sisters, Marcella Hiebert (Steven) of Broomfield, Colorado; Mary Arrowsmith (John) of Los Alamos, New Mexico; and Theresa Taylor of Lakewood, Colorado.

Mike was born in Los Alamos, New Mexico on March 5, 1953 to Joseph William Taylor and Rosalie (Coffield) Taylor. Mike graduated from New Mexico State University in 1975 and spent his professional life with the Bureau of Land Management, where he met the love of his life and wife of twenty-seven years, Joanie Losacco. Mike's adoring love for Joanie was apparent to all who knew them. Together, Mike and Joanie raised four children, Kaitlyn Redfield-Ortiz (Zach, Oliver, Grace, and Abigail); Deborah Kane (Chris and Marcy); Jordan Redfield (Alyssa, Easton, and Owen), and James Taylor. Mike was never happier than when his kids were all together. He logged thousands of hours on long drives to pick up his kids, and delighted them with elaborate storytelling, real and imagined. Raising his family was the most important job he had, and Mike put in the work to do it.

Together, Joanie and Mike were the center of gravity for their immediate and extended family, hosting abundant Thanksgivings, Christmases, birthday parties, family dinners, and celebrations that drew family and friends from near and far. With a glass of red wine (no stem) and a paper towel to mop up sweat, Mike regularly labored in the Phoenix heat, grilling small mountains of meat and whipping up batches of guacamole to feed his enormous family. Joanie and Mike's home was equipped with a revolving door which repeatedly welcomed in returned adult children and their friends, a testament to their generosity and warmth.

Mike's grandchildren were drawn to him with a magnetism that bordered on magic. Fussy babies instantly relaxed, laying their heads on his shoulders and going limp in his arms. Crabby toddlers and even little boys too cool for cuddling never hesitated to climb into his lap and snuggle. Whenever the grandchildren eagerly ran up his doorsteps and excitedly rang the doorbell seven times, he would call out in his thunderous voice "get in this house and give me a squeezy hug!" and hold his arms open wide. They would then disappear into his office, where he would sit them in his lap and sort through his drawers, depositing coins, melted blobs of metal, stones, pocketknives, flashlights, and trinkets into the kids' pockets. His read-aloud renditions of Calvin & Hobbes, complete with irreverent impressions of Mrs. Wormwood and Calvin's dad, filled his grandchildren with laugh-until-you-can't-breathe happiness.

Mike was always proud to come to the rescue. As the resident biologist, his family tasked him with such unsavory jobs as dealing with the fallout from the dog's consumption of several bags of candy corn, searching for escaped pet snakes in the house, and handling the pet rodent's cannibalistic tendencies. Even as his children grew up, and their problems evolved, he reminded them frequently that he was always only twenty minutes away. Countless times and in countless ways, he showed up in only twenty minutes, to rescue them from tragedies big and small.

Among his loves were cold mornings, shooting scorpions with rubber bands, wearing shorts in the winter, watching monsoon storms on the patio, and spicy foods. Mike was a connoisseur of Craigslist and loved a good garage sale. Good luck finding a rock, plant, or bug that Mike could not identify.

Mike loved our public lands. Fishing and hunting with his family was a mainstay in his life. He excelled at gardening. Even when space was sparse, he lovingly grew tomatoes, peppers, and flowers. When he finally had more room, he painstakingly built his own garden, instilling a wonder for life in his grandchildren. His garden was the site of many pea parties and sweet moon-dances with his granddaughter, and overflows with abundance still.

Mike despised ordering from drive-thrus, floor mats in cars, ratchet straps, plumbing, technology of all kinds, bullies, sunglasses, January dieting, and people who insult referees and umpires. Much to his loving wife's frustration, he hated both performing house maintenance and calling a repairman. Mike's laughs (his sneezes, and his snores) could be heard from across the block. He gave the best, tightest hugs. To be in his embrace was to be safe.

For his wife, his family, and so many others, Mike was home. In his honor, please simply show love to your family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at https://givenow.lls.org/MichaelTaylor.

Joanie, I just heard tonight of Mike´s passing. I am so very sorry for you, your family and all of us who knew and enjoyed him. To say I was shocked to hear the sad news is an under statement. Mike was the best manager I ever worked for. He was a wonderful person, who loved his family very much, was caring and kind, and I considered him a friend and mentor. He was instrumental to BLM and inspired all who worked for him. He truly was one of the good guys! And he will be missed.

May the love of God and the peace of our Lord bless and console you all and give you the strength and comfort in the days ahead knowing the joyful memories shared will be a forever reminder of Mike´s love for you. My prayers and thoughts are with you all.

No words can bring peace and comfort. No time on earth is long enough to share with those we love. Mike Taylor - super person, friend, mentor and one of the funniest folks ever. Miss you. Love you. Be at peace our friend.

Joanie, What can I say about someone I have known and liked so much for 30+ years? My heart aches for you and your family. But there are so many happy memories to console me. Like I will think of him every time we remaining BLM season ticket holders gather annually to bemoan how bad the DBacks were the previous year, but hope for the best in the new season!

Joanie- I'm not sure two single guys could get into as much trouble as Mike and I did in Roswell without being in jail. Fortunately, most of those memories will remain unspoken until we can share together. You were the centerpiece of his life and he loved his family as no other. I never have run into someone who could make me laugh like Mike did. A wonderful guy with a huge heart and an uncompromising sense of doing the right thing. Stephanie and I mourn your loss.

Joanie. I think back on 2005 when we found each other at Chat, Chew & Chocolate which was the beginning of an amazing friendship. A bit later, we brought our husbands together. They were both reluctant to meet each other. But that night planted a connection that lasted for years. Your guy, Mike, and my guy, Charlie, developed love, respect & a true friendship that gave each of them exactly what they needed. Mike was Charlie's best friend here & they bonded beautifully. Mike was easy to love. He showed Charlie Arizona, taught him about hunting & fly fishing. Mike was the expert in everything Charlie did not know about. He cherished him, as I did. All I know now is that Heaven is rocking with the two of them together there. Mike will never be forgotten. Barbara

If we could just take a little from Mike´s goodness and big heart, we would all be the better. His love of family and giving heart will stay with me always. What a tale he could tell and found such joy in his stories. He will always be my favorite "walking encyclopedia, too"!!!! So many times I captured him taking pictures of all of us spontaneously without letting us know and later found so much humor in sharing them with us. What a character he was and the best of characters! Always loved his, What the Hell" and cocked eyebrow. And, oh how he loved his garden...always picking my favorites when I visited. When I think of Mike, he brings nothing but a smile to my face.

Mike lived a great and full life; I´ll always be grateful he was a big part of mine

Rest in peace, my friend.

Joanie, the memories in the writeup beautifully capture a remarkable guy. What is most clear is that, even though Mike is surely missed in so many ways and places, he is still also so present in how he affected all those around him. Thinking of Mike, and of you.

Joanie,
I am so sorry to hear of Mike´s passing; he was a good friend and one of BLM´s finest managers that I had the pleasure of working with over the years. I met and worked with Mike at Gila Center when I worked Wilderness Patrol and Mike worked helitack fire duty in 1973 & 74. He was always so fun to be around. A truly fine individual, intelligent, and hard working.
Mike, you will be missed, amigo. I will never forget you!

Joanie, I wanted to share this Irish prayer with you, I had it displayed at Don´s celebration of life. `I could not stay another day, to laugh, to work or play. Tasks undone must stay that way. And if my passing has left a void, then fill it with remembered joy."

Joanie,

An anonymous toast from an Irish wake.

Those we love don't go away,
They walk beside us every day,
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear.

Mike you will be missed.

Joanie, words cannot express the sadness I am feeling right now on the passing of Mike. Both of you have been an inspiration to me! I hope that you somehow find comfort and and peace in these trying times. I always looked up to Mike. His humor, common sense, and big heart were things I always respected about him. He was one of the greatest men I have had the pleasure to meet and work with. I have many great memories of him and his spirit will forever be with me. He left a legacy that he would have never understood and touched so many lives in a positive way. I have been thinking of both of you a lot in the past few days. Bless you, stay strong, and please celebrate his life because he lived a great one. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
