Michael Wilson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 18, 2010.
Florence, N.J. - Michael S. Wilson, 60, of Florence, N.J. and formerly of New London, passed away Thursday, May 13, 2010.

Michael was born in New London on Nov. 9, 1949, and was the son of the late Luther and Gilda (Tallevi) Wilson. Michael was a graduate of St. Bernards High School and the University of Connecticut.

Michael played for New London Little League for many years and was also a very dedicated contributor for the Boy Scouts of America, achieving Eagle Scout of Court of Honor. Michael was an avid New York Yankees fan and also enjoyed playing basketball.

He was a practicing Catholic and an active parishioner in both Connecticut and New Jersey.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Gloria Wilson. He is also survived by a brother, Peter Wilson of Norwich; sister and brother-in-law, Wendy and Billy Strong of Mystic; brother and sister-in-law, Steven and Peggy Wilson of Salem; brother, Scott Wilson of New London; aunt, Constance Hume of Waterford; cousin, William Hume and Jane Hume of Salem; stepson and wife, George and Dennise Yurcho; and a grandson; Nicholas Yurcho of Florence; stepdaughter and spouse, Karyn and Pat Dooley of Nashville, Tenn.; and many nieces and nephews in Connecticut.

Michael made his career in the trucking industry holding several high positions before becoming a co-founding partner of Bulk Connection in Mystic. Although semi-retired in recent years, he remained active in the industry as a consultant and freelancing agent.

Michael was a thoughtful, caring person who often went far out of his way to protect the dignity and well-being of others, especially his family and friends. He loved solving problems, and if you were having a tough time there was no greater comfort than knowing that Mike would soon be there to help in any way that he could. He was loved and respected by everyone who knew him. He was a great brother, son, father and friend, and he will live on in our hearts forever.

Gloria and family,

I was shocked to hear the news about Mike. He was a very caring man - thoughtful and generous. He was so good to my husband, Michael, during his illness. I feel blessed to have known Mike. May happy memories give you comfort in the days ahead.

To All who knew and loved Mike, particularly his sister, Wendy ---
How very tragic to lose your brother so soon. There is a shortage of good men like him. I wish I had known him, but I am grateful to know you! Hold on to the warm and fun memories of your family. Never let them fade.
With love,
Susie Coulson Burghes

Michael was loved and respected by all who knew him. We considered him part of our family. Michael was special, a true friend, a true Scout. A bright, but humble, light has gone out.

As we used to sing "and with the sun in the morning and the moon in the evening, we're all right" We're a little less all right with Mick's passing

Gloria:

During my time in New London I was a next door neighbor to Mike and his family for several years. Mike was a loving son and supporting family member to his entire family. Please accept my sympathy.

Sincere wishes and prayers to Gloria and Mike's family. Besides being a great friend, he was a brother Staff member at Camp Wakenah BSA, Salem, CT., which was our `summer home' for almost 7 years. To appreciate Mike, you had to watch him deal with the many first or seasoned campers who were homesick or challenged. He treated everyone with respect. He was our best man 35 years ago, which says it all...the best man.

Sincere condolences to Gloria and the family. Michael was a great friend from way back in the neighborhood, at school and beyond. I am very sad to learn of his passing, but I cherish many fond memories of those halcyon days.
