Michelle Hatch Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 16 to Dec. 18, 2022.
HATCH--Michelle, has left this earth to design for a higher cause, peacefully dying in her beautiful home in Sag Harbor, NY on December 5, 2022.

Michelle was born May 8,1956 in Levittown, PA to Mary & James Hatch. She attended Neshaminy Senior High school, graduating in 1974. Michelle's true passion was fashion, which took her to NYC where she enrolled herself in the prestigious Parsons School of Design. This was a life changing decision which led to a design position at "The House of Ferragamo" in Florence, Italy. Michelle was assigned a desk to design purses and leather accessories. Her love affair with Italy had begun. Her next stop was Milan, designing for the force of fashion in the 90's, Donna Karan. Michelle committed a decade of her career to the brand. She was known for executing complicated details in accessories & handbag design and pursued just the right artisan to complete the vision. She developed elaborate relationships with factories, tanneries and hardware vendors. A former colleague noted that Donna would come up with an "idea" and Michelle would find just the right factory to execute Donna's vision. Her next chapter brought her back to NYC where she designed for Judith Leiber, St.John, Monsac, Sachin and Babi who partnered with Michelle to create her own label, MichelleHatchNY. Michelle also designed a home furnishing collection with show stopping embroidered pillows and throws that were in high demand with Interior Designers nationwide. In recent years, she assisted the designer Andrea Gomez in creating an extensive shoe collection. How fitting for Michelle to get to travel back to her favorite Italian cities while showing a young aspiring designer her Italy, her life. This was truly a gift as the next chapter was a difficult yet courageous battle fighting brain cancer. She has left an indelible mark on her family of friends who were inspired by her optimism and bravery she showed in the darkest of times.

Michelle is survived by her siblings Susan, Patricia, Mary Ellen and James. She loved her nieces and nephew, Allison, Taylor, Katarina, Elizabeth, Jacquelyn, Katherine, Patricia and Ryan. A memorial in Sag Harbor is planned for early May, email [email protected] for more info. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Memorial Sloan Kettering , NYC rare cancer dept in memory of Michelle Hatch is greatly appreciated. Ciao Bella..we all love and miss you terribly.

Michelle was a client who became a mentor and a friend to our studio. Our paths were intertwined from my husband being the person who did all the touch ups for her photos for her bag line back in the day at duggal, which we found out as we were getting to know each other, to meeting me and use sharing our notes about parsons and myself sharing and marveling at her experience of the world of fashion from a different decade. My respect and love for her is not long in time but deep. I wish I had met her earlier, but I´m blessed I met her at all in my lifetime.such a wonderful amazing woman shined another path for me and kept my perspective of life more vivid and optimistic.she is a legend in my book, and I will miss her stories and opinions.she was the definition of amazing. Our sincerest condolences to her close friends and family members.

Michelle and I met as neighbors living in the same Greenwich Village building and discovered we had mutual friends. I enjoyed our impromptu chats, working together on the Tenants Association and evenings spent visiting in her impeccably decorated apartment.
At the height of the 2008 recession, I was laid off from my job. During one of our chats I mentioned needing to get my hair colored. Michelle said, "That´s expensive. Why don´t you do it yourself?" I told her I didn´t know how. Without missing a beat, Michelle offered, "I´ll take you to Ricky´s to get what you need and, then, bring a towel to my apartment and I´ll show you." And that´s what she did. There´s not a single time I color my hair that I don´t think of Michelle and her incredible generosity of time, talent and spirit at that time and so many others.
I was terribly saddened to hear of her recent battle with cancer and her death. Michelle was a truly beautiful person and her light will be missed. My heartfelt condolences go to her family and family of friends.

I am so sorry to hear of Michelle's passing. I was lucky enough to have worked with her while she was designing for St. John. She met me in Italy and showed me around. I met with her friends for dinner and a dinner party at her friends house. She knew the history behind every statue, building and historical landmark. She was beyond a beautiful person. She was warm and welcoming and so dang talented! She will be truly missed.
