Mikayla Raines Obituary
Mikayla Raines, a wildlife rehabilitator and the founder of SaveAFox rescue, which rescues animals from fur farms, died June 20, 2025, by suicide in Minnesota at the age of 30.
Raines began working with wildlife, foxes in particular, when she was in her teens. She later drew a following on social media when she began sharing her efforts on Instagram and YouTube, showcasing the work of SaveAFox rescue, which she formed when she was 20. The nonprofit rescued foxes from fur farms, helped rehabilitate those with injuries or birth defects, and adopted foxes to other facilities with similar licenses.
She is survived by husband Ethan Frankamp, daughter Freya, mother Sandi Raines, stepfather Del Goetze, father Don Borchert, sisters Jennifer Swanson and Ashley Borchert and brother Jeff Goetze.
"Mikayla was truly the most amazing and inspiring individual I have ever known, and not having her here makes everything feel empty," her husband Ethan said on Instagram. "I feel broken. But I will continue her dream, and I hope to have your support going forward so that we can do good in her name."

Freya your mummy was very special. I followed her online and saw all her posts. She was very pretty with beautiful hair, lovely eyes and a smile that would light up a room.
She showed everyone what it was like to help save animals and how to be kinder to all animals. She tried very very hard to rescue foxes that weren´t treated how they should be.
People loved your mum online very much.
She was funny, she spoke well and above all she spoke how much she loved you.
Know she was really proud of you and she would want you to be happy.

I was a follower of Save AFox for many years. I only knew your mother through what she posted on videos as we never met, but I felt like we did. I saw what a big heart to your mother had for the animals and her constant desire to save more. I did not know about her medical issues as she kept those to herself quite well. But I did see her beautiful spirit, her loving care for everything, her devotion to you and your father, and her love of life. She appeared to have a great zest for life. I believe you and your dad were her greatest joy. please know that you have millions of people who loved your mother and cared for her despite us not knowing her personally. But we felt like we did know her personally. I wept when I heard about your mom passing. I can feel my own grief over that. Please know she was loved by so many and she will be missed by so many forever, including her large family of animals. Be strong for yourself in the future and know that you have a great foundation of people caring for you.

Just always remember the good times, the great things she did. How your mother tried everything she could to make a difference. I wish I had the money and land to do what she did. I've been following the rescue of foxes for years now and could see even through the photos, Mikayla is a brilliant and rare person. I'm just a person messaging from far away in Australia, but I supported all the fantastic work she did to rescue all foxes. Hey there, my name is Nikki. The first video i viewed of Mikayla was with finnegan fox, I was watching it with my then 4 year old. Ever since that very first video, my son is head over heels in love with foxes, because of Mikayla my son found his true love for foxes, and he watched her daily. When I told him (he's now 7) that she passed, he was heartbroken, and has since not been able to watch the videos, but one day, when he is ready, he will once again rewatch/watch his favorite foxes. From the bottom of our hearts and soul, we loved you mikalya, and your passing is a huge loss to the world.

Mikayla made a huge impact, even for those, on the other side of the world, for me, personaly, I started rescuing and fostering feral cats. I know that having 14 foster cats at home is not a big number if you have enough love for them all

Rest in peace, dear Mikayla. I literally have no words to describe the amount of respect and adoration I have for you. Mikayla's loss has been very hard to digest. I have never genuinely felt so much pain over a person I didn't know personally. She had this light within her that attracted millions to her groundbreaking work.

Loved watching her vids. You could tell that she cared for and loved the animals she saved. Not only were the foxes awesome to see but she was also a pivotal part to the videos. I always enjoyed her talking to them, such good energy. I'm sadden to learn that deep down she needed help. May she rest peacefully and may the afterlife treat her well.

I didn't know Mikayla personally but she is someone I looked up to and admired greatly. I became passionate about foxes some years ago, having a family of six visting my garden I came to understand what gentle souls they are, yet dispised and mistreated by so many. I became an anti fox hunting advocate here in the uk and then a wildlife rescuer with foxes being my area of expertise. I used to watch all Mikaylas's videos, loving Finnegan but also the sad desperate videos at the fur farms and I used to imagine the pain and hurt this must cause her, yet she put all that pain away to help them, my heart used to break for her and the foxes. There are few people in the world as special as she was, if only everyone was as kind, caring and empathetic as she, the world for sure would be a far better place. I'm so very sad the world has lost someone so special who was really making a difference, I wish I could have met her to say Thank you and you are amazing

Dear little Freya, I only knew your mom from videos, but I can say for sure that someone who loves animals as much as she did is an invaluable person to human society. She is a person full of love who thinks of herself the least, a person endowed with high sensitivity and and empathy, which is no longer considered to be "cool" nowadays. Your mommy tried to pass on to you all her love for animals, which she felt in herself, and that, in my opinion, is the greatest gift she could have given you in her lifetime. Keep it inside you, because animals will never let you down. They will always be your loyal friends.

Hi,
Mikayla doing what she did as long as she could reminded me of my childhood dream about helping animals. Her death highlighted how unfair it is that the good in this world is preserved by so few of us and because of that they need to carry a burden that is impossible to carry without getting hurt. I'm not from USA, but from Europe, and even seeing her through a screen changed how I evaluated my own impact on the world. I was living in a city, in apartment, when I heard the news. I decided to foster a small malnourished cat who was found at a port in addition to the two of our own. Now I'm moving outside of the city to a small house to be able to constantly provide a foster home for the animals whose needs me and my partner will be able to fulfill there. I believe her impact for many was a wake up call that allowed people to see how little many of us do compared to what is possible or what would be needed in order to lighten the burden of the few who don't have a choice because of the goodness of their heart. She will be living on in the countless lives she saved and will save in the future through the hand of the people she impacted. I added a picture of the small kitty that will live with us until she finds a good permanent home.

I'd first like to offer my condolences to Mikayla's family. Praying for strength, love, and good memories of Mikayla. I began watching Mikayla on Saveafox FB page when it came up on my feed. And, I must say Mikayla helped me fall in love with the foxes. In fact, I began to see she was caring for multiple animals and it was the most loving, kind, and caring gestures I've seen in awhile. Her heart and love was pure for all the animals she was helping and caring for. Mikayla is gone too soon but she had a positive impact on so many from animals to people and that is exceptional and something to be very proud of her for doing. Mikayla was such an exceptional soul. She made the world softer ...kinder...and every animal she rescued had to have felt the warmth of her beautiful soul. She so selflessly put the well-being of animals before her own, which is an admirable move in my eyes. Sweet angel. Your mom was such a beautiful loving woman with the biggest heart ever. Her passion for animals and every single one she saved is something to be so very proud of. Shes in heaven helping God now caring and loving every animal in heaven. She was loved by so many. God bless you sweet child. Always hold your head high and your momma lives on in your soul.

I only ran across Mikayla's page the week before her death, but her radiant smile and absolutely beautiful face drew me in. What a wonderful, compassionate young woman she was! Freya, your mother was one-of-a-kind and I truly hope you grow up knowing what an incredible person she was, and how much she loved you. Rest in Paradise Mikayla.

I stumbled across Mikayla´s rescue page a year ago and was immediately in awe of this beautiful woman with a heart the size of the ocean. I watched video after video as it found my Facebook feed and with each new video I found more beauty and vibrancy laced with compassion and kindness. Rest in peace, Mikayla. You left a void in the world, but your light will always shine.

I have been following Mikaylas journey for many years now and seeing the many accomplishments she and her team have achieved and lives changed because of them will have an impact on generations to come. Even on her darkest days the joy she gave to others was life changing to many including myself. I can only imagine the love lost as your family. For that there are no words to make up for what youve lost. But I encourage you to hold on to the good memories and remember when the pain you feel gets to be too much, that the pain is a reflection of how much love you guys share. May your family find peace in the days to come.

Mikayla is now pain and stress free enjoying eternity at the rainbow bridge taking care of all the neglected
forgotten and sick animals that were cast aside. Our Lord Jesus Christ and Francis of Assisi knew that Mikayla was the right person for the job of overseeer and rescuer at the bridge so they assigned her that position for eternity may you rest in peace at the bridge Makayla you are missed down here on Earth by your animals your family and all of us

Mikayla was and always will be a beacon of light with a pure, gifted heart. I didn't know her personally, but in highschool, I used SaveAFox as inspiration for my brochure project. It was a small project, but Mikayla's efforts and her love for animals drove me to wanting to follow a similar path. She has encouraged me and hundreds of others to push for better treatment of our surroundings; humans and animals alike, and I know that her memory will live on through all of us. Her light shall never dim and I wish the absolute best to her loved ones. May you rest easy, Mikayla <3 we love you.
