Mildred C. Poteet was born March 13, 1926, in Greenfield, Ill., to George Newell Cole and Marquerite Florine Secor Cole. She passed from this life on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2009, in Stillwater, Okla., having reached the age of 83 years, 10 months and 6 days.
She married James Louis Poteet Jr. on Aug. 7, 1947, in Greenfield, Ill., and he preceded her in death on May 21, 2006. They made their home in Pawnee, where they owned and operated Poteet Funeral Home for many years. Mildred was one of the first women in Oklahoma to obtain an Oklahoma funeral directors license.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pawnee and also Eastern Stars. She was devoted to the community her family and especially her grandchildren.
Mildred is survived by a daughter, Janet Thrasher and her husband, Pete, Pawnee, Okla.; a son, James L. Poteet III and his wife, Terry, Overland Park, Kan.; four grandchildren, Curtis Pinkerton, Atlanta, Ga., Nicole Cartmell and her husband, Doug, Kremlin, Okla., Sydney Poteet, Overland Park, Kan., and Riley Poteet, Overland Park, Kan.; two great-grandchildren, Devlynn Cartmell, Kremlin, Okla., and Laydon Cartmell, Kremlin, Okla.; a sister, Bernadine Smith, Wheaton, Ill.; a brother, Earlom Cole, Stillman Valley, Ill.; and a number of other relatives and many friends.
Besides her husband, J. L., she was preceded in death by her parents, George and Marguerite Cole; grandson Jason Thrasher; sister Bernice Rives; and six brothers, Allen Cole, Keith Cole, Kenneth Cole, Hubert Cole, Darrell Cole and Dale Cole.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, 2009, at the First Baptist Church, Pawnee, Okla., with the Rev. Ray Moffeit officiating. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery, Pawnee, Okla., under the direction of Poteet Funeral Home, Pawnee, Okla.
