Here it is...almost Thanksgiving. Last year this time, Flori and I were preparing to go to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with Mother and the family. A lot has changed since last year. Mother and Sherman are with the Lord. Oh how I miss them so. I miss my mother so much it hurts.

Today is my birthday and the first without Mother. I would call her just to hear her sing happy birtday. When she was able, she always sent me a card with "a piece of change." I miss my mother so....more than words will ever be able to articulate. This world is just not the same without her. In her honor I will live it to the best of my ability. I will always love you mother!

Today I wanted to call you. I know you and Uncle Sherman are singing up there. I am so sad that you are both gone. I still can not believe it. I am so proud of my mom and how she has tried to not be so sad during this time. She loved her brother sooo much and I am doing everything to take care of her. I love you so much Mother. I miss you everyday and it is not easy. Aunt Marie acts just like you now more than before. I just hate being so far away from everyone. We had a great time in memory of Uncle Sherman and he was the life of the party.

It is geting closer to Mothers Day and we are not making any plans to come see you. Everyday I want to call you and tell you about my day. I know that you are watching over me but it is not the same. I would give anything to hug you, hear your raspy voice and see your beautiful smile one more time. Words can not express the pain that i still have of missing you. When i cry it is only because I miss you but I know that you are in a better Place. Although you lived 95 years the 28 years we have shared is never enough. You have out lived many of your brothers, sisters and children and was to me superwomen. superwomen could not live forever but I expected you to. I miss you sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much. I love you Mother and Happy early Mothers day.

God truly blessed me when HE brought us together. It's hard to believe that I was only seventeen when I first met you. You made me feel welcome in your home and soon after, a part of the family. I never felt like a, "daughter-in-law". You made me feel like a daughter and that you held me in a special place in your heart. There are so many memories stored in my mind that your spirit will live forever in my heart. You have been a true role model for me, a strong Black Christian woman, who lived life, being a loving and caring Mother to all.
I love you and miss you,
Carol

The summer of 1981, one of the most memorable moments in my life- As I made my formal introduction of my family and myself, what followed was an immediate embrace of love, known shortly therafter only as a mothers love. There are truly Angels on earth as well as in Heaven, and Mother having been one on earth has gone on to continue in heaven. I will truly miss her so.... The care that she has always expressed will live the hearts of both Brenda and I.

There is only one word to describe you and it is LOVE. By example, you've shown me what it's all about. That Love is what you have instilled in so many of us. I see a piece of you in each and everyone that you've touched. Through,
Auntie Freddie, I hear your voice.
Auntie Marie, I see your mannerisms.
Uncle Sherman, I hear your laughter.
Chris and Jeffrey, I can feel your heart.
Flori, I see your hardwork and how you put yourself before others.
Mom (Carol), Uncle Joe, Auntie Liz....I can feel your altruistic heart.
Youve shown us how important family is. You've prayed for each and everyone of us and through your faith in god, I've learned what LOVE is.
I love you and miss you.

Mother Shelby was simply a joy to be around and always had something kind or uplifting to say. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her....which was everybody who had the pleasure to know her.

I was often on the phone with Mother. She was the ultimate conversationalist. I just knew that after I was better, I would be able to take to lunch and other places. I still hear her, and I feel that she is still here, just not physically. With much love, Jeffrey

My mother....I will miss her forever. There is a hole in my heart that will forever be empty. Mother was simply wonderful, strong, fun to be around, and had a great sense of humor. Mother was indeed in charge but did not mind letting us have our way sometimes. Lord help us now as we adjust to life without her. I look forward to seeing my sweet mother in heaven!

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.
