Millicent Mason Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 28, 2024.
Millicent Ann Bleakney Mason, 87, was born in the Rio Grande Valley to Dr. Phil and Mary Bleakney on August 20, 1937. She graduated from high school in San Benito, Texas, and was accepted by Mary Baldwin University in Staunton, Virginia. Millicent transferred to The University of Texas for her junior and senior years to complete her teaching degree. As a proud member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, she loved her Zeta sisters and maintained lifelong friendships with many of them. In later years, she loved returning to Austin to help the Actives prepare for Rush Week. Millicent married Howard Mason on February 2, 1986. They spent 32 years together, traveling the world, actively participating in events at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, and enjoying time with their family and friends. Millicent loved entertaining during the holidays, and she cherished relaxing at their beach house in Port O'Connor. St. Martin's held a distinct place in her heart: she and Howard were married there, and her children were Baptized and Confirmed there. Millicent's faith was deep, and she participated for many years in Episcopal Church Women and Women's Bible Study. She was a devoted volunteer for Daughters of the American Revolution, American Cancer Society through Cattle Barons, and Lord of the Streets, a church mission for the homeless in Houston. She also enjoyed playing card games and Mahjong with her relatives and friends. Millicent is survived by her children: daughter, Mary Bleakney Ray, and son, John Robertson Ray, III (Rebecca), Samuel Carleton Mason, Howard Irving Mason III, Kathy Kingman Mason, and Cynthia Anne Mason; her sister Susan Bleakney Baker (Penny); her grandchildren Marcelle McInnis, John Robertson Ray IV, Juliet Ray, Ben Scheiner (Colleen), Grayson Scheiner; her great-granddaughter, Emma Scheiner; and her many nieces, nephews and cousins whom she loved dearly. Her family is most appreciative of Andrea Evans for her years of love and devotion as Millicent's assistant. They also are grateful for the personable and exceptional attention given to Millicent by her Hospice nurse Delaine Bingham and her Hospice aide Rhonda Taylor from The Care Team. Her Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at 2:00 PM Central Time in the Chapel of St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road, Houston, Texas, with a reception immediately following. The Service will be live-streamed and available to watch on the St. Martin's website for three weeks beginning November 21: https://www.stmartinsepiscopal.org/worship/watch-online/

I first met Millicent during my time as a student at Episcopal High School. Later, she married one of my father´s closest friends, Howard. Millicent was a truly wonderful person, and I was honored to know her for over 35 years. She will be deeply missed. Sending prayers and love to the family.
