Milton Lyon "Jerry" Garrison

Milton Lyon “Jerry� Garrison, 88, died April 18, 2018. He was born August 20, 1929. Jerry graduated from Newport News High School in 1947, and Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School, where he excelled in track. At Newport News Shipbuilding he was a piping designer, cost engineer, and retired as a manager of marketing after 44 years of service. He was a member of the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice Alumni Association and the Propeller Club. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean War. Jerry was a member of Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman of the Administrative Board, Council on Ministries, Staff Parrish, Worship Committee, and was a member of the Chancel Choir for 50 years. His passion for music was evident in his participation as a member of the Peninsula Symphony Orchestra under the late Cary McMurran, the York River Symphony Orchestra, Peninsula Concert Band, and charter member of the York River Concert Band. Preceding him in death were his mother, Elizabeth Lyon Garrison; father, Floyd L. Garrison; brother, Linwood W. Garrison, and son-in-law, Benjamin B. Miller. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Joan Padgett Garrison; son, Jeffrey Stuart Garrison of Newport News; daughter, Susan Miller Huffman (Sam) of Harrisonburg; sister-in-law, Sheridan P. Taylor of Newport News; three grandchildren, Sydney Garrison Downs (Daniel), Matthew Harper Miller (Meredith), Jeffrey Lyon Miller; two step-grandchildren, Benjamin Miller and Christopher Miller; and great grandsons, Lucas Garrison Downs, Lincoln Jeffrey Downs and Benjamin Lyon Miller. A Memorial Service will be held at Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church, on Saturday, April 21, at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends at a reception following the service at the church. Memorial donations may be made to the Music Fund or the Food Pantry, Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church, 1024 Harpersville Road, Newport News, VA 23601.
