Miriam Borowsky

March 13, 1937 - December 22, 2023

Miriam was a survivor, a thriver, a lover and a fighter. Miriam was born in Israel to a Polish Jewish family in 1937. In 1938, the family moved to a village in Northern France where Miriam would grow up under the dark shadow of the holocaust. Miriam was just six years old when her father was taken by the French Vichy and eventually deported to a concentration camp in the Baltic States, where he was murdered by the Nazi Regime. After the end of the war, Miriam left home on her own at the age of 15 and moved to Israel to live and work on a kibbutz. Miriam studied nursing in Israel at Sharei Tzedek Hospital and worked there as a nurse for several years.

At the age of 16 she met Itzik, the man who would be her future husband and life partner. As often happens in life, circumstances separated the two and Miriam was briefly married and had her first child, a son, Erez. Miriam's first husband died in a plane crash after only a few years of marriage. Miriam and Itzik never lost touch and the two were subsequently married in 1965 after legally immigrating to the United States. Miriam, Itzik and Erez lived in New York City for 5 years before moving to Los Angeles, California in 1970. In the early 70's the couple welcomed two more children, daughters Einit and Orit to the family. Miriam was a dedicated and loving mother. Miriam worked part-time at the elementary school her daughters attended so she could keep a close eye on them. Miriam was a natural polyglot, who spoke Hebrew, French and Yiddish fluently, with enough Spanish and Italian to communicate worldwide. She taught herself English by watching soap operas. Miriam loved art, antiques, and animals. She especially loved dogs and was always happy to babysit and spoil her grand dogs. Miriam had a wonderful sense of humor which she definitely passed on to her offspring.

In the early 90's, Miriam and Itzik moved to Las Vegas, relocating their camera store where Miriam helped for many years. Living in Las Vegas, Miriam was thrilled to welcome two grandchildren to the family. Sophia and Theo whom she adored and doted on.

Miriam was dedicated to telling her story of being a Holocaust survivor. She gave several television and audio interviews and spoke in front of many school children over the years. In May of 2023, at the ripe age of 86, Miriam was invited to her childhood town of Douai, France to see the Stolperstein (memorial stone) installed for her father, and to participate in the ceremony of the installation of her uncle's memorial stone and to speak at a high school in front of 150 students. She was also interviewed by the local newspaper and gave an interview to the French Holocaust Foundation.

Miriam passed away suddenly from a cardiac arrest on December 22, 2023 with her husband of 58 years by her side. She is survived by her husband Itzik, her son Erez Borowsky, and his wife Nattaya, of Jacksonville Florida, her daughter Einit Mussey and her husband Dan, of Prescott, Arizona, and her daughter Orit Harpaz and her husband, Gal, of Los Angeles, California. Miriam was a fiercely devoted mother, a loving wife and a great friend to those she loved. She will be forever remembered, cherished and deeply missed.

SO many memories, Miriam was my moms best friend, she was a force in our family. A special moment I shared with Miriam was when I was very little I was sleeping over at her house and I couldn't sleep, Miriam laid next to me and told me to listen to the crickets outside...and it was soothing and it was comforting. And when I hear crickets I think about her... hoping she and my Mom have found each other again and are listening to the sounds of nature together as Orit and I often do ..... xo

How can you summarize in a few words a love of a lifetime?

Miriam is my dad´s first cousin. She was always part of my life as far as I remember. She was always there for me with big warm hugs and a very honest heart. She was my rock in all times. She loved me unconditionally, and I miss her too much.

What a beautiful tribute to such a deserving woman. Having lost my own mother years ago, Miriam made me feel loved and cared about every time I was in her presence (and the lectures ensured me that it was heartfelt). I will miss her, but I still see her in her daughter's eyes (the resemblance is uncanny). Sending you all love and prayers for comfort during this difficult time.

My sincere condolences to the family. I was so lucky to meet Miriam this past September. Her smile lit up the room. I will never forget that day. She welcomed me to your wonderful family with open arms. May her memory be a blessing. Love, Melinda
