Miriam Makeba

Miriam Makeba was not only beautiful and brilliant, she was a phenomenal woman of substance! She used her voice & musical talents to heighten the U.S. awareness of apartheid in South Africa and encouraged our brothers and sisters in Africa (and elsewhere) to continue to fight for freedom. Her legacy is tremendously rich and will endure forever!!!!! I LOVE THIS WOMAN!!!!!!

a dancer friend in high school introduced me to her music. I was awe-struck at the beauty and sound of her voice...she touched people way deep, and will continue to inspire many generations to come. She was absolutely one of the earth's "birds" -a voice you could not duplicate, a heart that brought the sound upward in thousands of lives. She will be missed. A treasure....never to forget.

To The Makeba Family: I am so sorry she is no longer here with us, but do know that she is still here with us in spirit. I pray that you all will be comforted by these words:

Try to remember that a GOOD woman never dies; You will see her many times.
You will feel her in all things that are here out of love, and for love.
The person of a woman may leave or be taken away, but the best part of a GOOD woman stays. It stays FOREVER!

At the age of eight in Trinidad W.I., far away from South Africa, I first experienced her voice. She sang in a language that I had never heard before. Though my knowledge of apartheid was limited to the fact that it was a minority rule gov't., I felt her pain through the timbre of her voice and the melody of her music. I questioned God as to why He could allow this. I walked away knowing that she would forever be a part of my life. I only saw her performances on screen. The sound of her voice reminds me that we are to treat each other with respect and to love one another as Christ has loved us, thereby avoiding abuse of each other.

I was young, but remember hearing "Pata, Pata," and being intriqued by its uniqueness. Her music was inspiring and I hope I can die doing something I love, that made a difference. Condolences to all her loved ones and may she rest in peace.

I remember hearing Ms. Makeba sing Pata Pata on The Steve Allen Show in the mid 60's. An unforgettable voice that continued to entertain the world until her untimely passing.

Pata Pata rose to #12 on the music charts and remained on the charts for 8 weeks.

What a gain for Heaven - what a loss for us; my sympathy. Having loved her haunting & exciting music since the 60's -- and then younger co-workers claiming this "new" delight in Miriam Makeba in the mid-80's I was 'elevated' that I even knew of Ms. Miriam when I related my appreciation and knowledge of this truly amazing and gifted woman from days gone by. Thank you Mama Africa - thank you! Rest from your wondrous labors and know that you ARE loved!

My deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Miriam Makeba. We thank GOD for allowing this precious songbird to share the music of our motherland with all the world. Her voice will be with us forever.

I remembered her from an episode on the Bill Cosby show. I thought that she was well versed, and offered mankind so much. It is futile that we continue to celebrate Miriam Makeba even after death.

My heart goes out to you at this time and in the days ahead.

I remember as a little girl hearing Miriam's voice for the first time and learning that there was a whole world of music to enjoy. Thank you Miriam, for your gift of song, now is the time to share your beautiful voice with the rest of the universe.

I named my babygirl Miesha Makeba. I have followed her since she first came to the U.S., singing with Hughe Masakala, when she married Stokley Carmichael and other events of her life. I was first introduced to Queen Makeba's music in the 80's. When visiting Ghana in the mid-90's, I really experienced the diversity of her music and it's deep meaning! My thoughts and prayers are with you during this transition.

Another heavenly voice called home. I met Ms. Makeba when she toured with Paul Simon and she was such a gracious and inspiring woman. Such a beautiful voice. She will truly be missed. My prayers go up for the family.

Miriam Makeba, one of my favorite singers from Africa, I've listened to her since the early 1960's up to the present. She was a great, strong lady. I will miss her.
