As one of Mitch's cousins I always looked up to him. He was so handsome, smart and funny! What a sad time for our families. Mine and Mitch's grandparents were blessed with six children and nineteen grandchildren. Their eldest daughter, Thelma, met, fell in love with, and married Claud Smith. They had two sons and Mitch was the eldest and the first grandchild for the Mitchell's (Papa and Mama). A few years later his little brother, John Blake was born.
Mitch adored his Papa who was a miller and had a cotton gin. He had been the first person in Clay County, AL to own a Model A Ford in the late 1920's.
There followed 17 more grandchildren from the five other siblings of Thelma's: Grace had four, Paula had six, Blake had two, Fred had three and Jack had two. Us cousins are scattered from Maryland to Texas to south Alabama to Georgia. Growing up the older ten or so of us got to play together and know each other to an extent even though none of us lived in the same cities but we would visit Mama and Papa and each other's homes.
Of the six Mitchell children, three remain with us: Grace, Fred and my Mother, Blake Mitchell Vines who will be the only sibling able to attend Mitch's service. She is 89 and was in Roanoke when he was born and used to change his diapers! We lost our dear cousin Dottie (McMurray) Long to cancer much too early and my special little brother, Barry, ten years ago. And now Mitch. Our hearts go out to you, Sharon, and your daughters and grandchildren as you deal with the loss of your loved one and our cousin, Mitch Smith. All of us who knew him loved him.
