Mitchell Snider Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Oct. 3, 2009.

SNIDER Mitchell Died very peacefully September 26, 2009 at the Marion Hospice in Vancouver. He had 91 years of a life well lived and truly enjoyed. He is survived by his daughters Judith and Deborah (Eric Fielder); sons Jeffrey (Jill) and Phillip; grandchildren Michael (Kelsey Dundon), Jaclyn, Whitney, Jaime, Nathan, Rebecca and Solaye; and sister Ruth Aren (Sandy). Mitchell's life began in Vancouver, at the Ferrara Court, at Hastings and Jackson, in 1918. He was born to Joseph Snider and Goldie Levy, (followed by brother Phil and sister Ruth), one of the first Jewish families in Vancouver. Mitchell grew up in the West End, attending Lord Roberts and King George Schools. In 1942, he joined the Canadian Airforce and was part of a new unit training radar technicians. Two years later he was transferred to the Royal Airforce and was overseas until 1946. Mitch served on or close to the front in his capacity, guiding in bomber sorties. He later became a member of the Shalom branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. After the war, Mitchell worked for his father in one of the original businesses on Hastings Street, San Francisco Tailors, later evolving into a pawnshop. This became a major focus of his life for the next 58 years. He loved working there and his customers loved doing business with him. Mitchell and the love of his life,Tova (Gertrude Rabofsky) were married in 1948 and in their 51 years together, had four children and seven grandchildren, who for most of his life, remained in Vancouver. Mitch was deeply committed to his family, often initiating gatherings, taking any opportunity to pass on family history. Mitchell kept his mind and body active, constantly learning new things. Good friends, an active social life and involvement in the Jewish community were part of Mitch's life to the end. His charm, quick wit and at times disarming sense of humour entertained all who were around him. Mitchell will be greatly missed by his loving family and many dear friends. The funeral was held Sunday, September 27 at the Schara Tzedek Cemetery, officiated by Rabbi Rosenblatt. A special thank you to Dr. Harvey Halperin and the staff of the Marion Hospice for the exceptional care Mitchell received.
