Modesta Rojas Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 30, 2013.
Modesta Carlotta Rojas passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, July 27, 2013 surrounded by family. She is predeceased by her daughter Anna Rojas Infante, her husband Joe Rojas and survived by her 4 children, Martha Ochoa, Joe Rojas, Gloria Harrison and Terry Nunez all from Houston, Texas. Modesta was born November 4, 1929, sharing the same birthday with her granddaughter Jackie Marie Campise (a.k.a. Jackie Blue) and many wonderful birthdays were celebrated together. Modesta was born and raised in Houston, Texas where she was the youngest of 10 children with her oldest sibling still alive and well at the young age of 93. Her parents Antonia and Gil Soto raised their children on the east side of Houston in a small neighborhood of Magnolia. Modesta attended catholic school at Immaculate Heart of Mary and she carried this strong faith with her throughout her life. Though she lost her husband at the age of 32 and was left a widow with 5 children, her faith and love of her family helped her sustain this tragedy. Her love of family was her main focus in life, she never remarried and was happy just being with her children and grandchildren. She leaves behind 14 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. Modesta loved music and dancing, she performed the traditional folkloric dance as a young girl at various school and church festivals. Her love of music helped her during her cancer treatments and would often ask to listen to music to sooth her and cheer her up. Modesta always had a love for dressing up and always liked to go shopping for pretty shoes and clothes. She remembers as a young girl working at the tailor shop to sew buttons on the soldier's uniforms during World War II. Often the tailors would make her beautiful suits and dresses from the left over material. She retired in 2000 from the City of Houston and enjoyed spending her retirement days with her family. A special thanks to all the caregivers who took such good care of her during her illness; Olga Gonzales, Yolanda Charles, the staff at Comfort Keepers especially Joetta and Sherrill, her oncologist doctor; Dr Sandra Hatch and primary Dr. Kudmenetsky plus many other devoted friends Maria, Nellie, Cynthia, Stephanie and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mom another birthday has approached on 11/4/14 you would be 85 years old....the pain of losing you is slowing fading but it will never be gone forever. I remember all the birthday celebrations we spent together and having Jackie share the same birthday with you has always been special to all of us. Now, we celebrate Jackie's birthday without you physically but not in spirit. In fact, we said a prayer for you and join hands together then let balloons fly away to the heavens on Sunday, November 2nd; it was a beautiful sunny cool afternoon. I always remember your birthday being in the fall when the weather changes and the holidays are near; it is my favorite time of the year. I especially remember how you always cooked a big Turkey dinner for all of us and the whole family came over. I loved your cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes, or potato salad, and jalapeno's….only true Mexicans' had jalapenos as a condiment with Thanksgiving dinner…LOL these are just a few of the things I remember best of you!
Mom, one day we will be together again, until then I will hold on to all the beautiful memories we shared together.

Mom:
Your 1 year anniversary already approached and still cannot believe you are not here with us. I want to call you and talk like we would every day, I think about you all the time especially when I attend church. It was one of the best times being together as we went to church, then out to eat maybe to one of your favorite restaurants like Annie Chang, maybe even sneak a little shopping too but only if you were up to it. One day, I will be with you again, until then I promise to always remember you in everything I do and say and to keep your memorial alive by sharing everything about you to my grandchildren. Unfortunately you will not be able to be on earth to see your grandchildren and great grandchild grow but they will know you too, through my stories and pictures of all the wonderful times we spent together. Love you mom. Gloria

I have to tell you my heart is sad right now hearing this..I wish I would have had one more visit with her..she was so very precious...I am so thankful you gave me the opportunity to know her. I became so partial to her because of her so very sweet presence. Just knowing her was a blessing. she made me feel so very special because I knew she did not get out for much...but she managed to make appointments with me. I know it us selfish to be sad because my sweet modesta is walking on streets of gold, listening to the angels sing, and is the company of our all mighty loving Lord in a body that is perfect and whole..free from pain and suffering...I am sorry for your pain and I will be praying for peace and comfort..please let me know about services. sending all my love_stephanie
