Mona Cothran

Mona J. Cothran, age 65, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2025, in Elkmont, Alabama. Born on January 6, 1960, in Bay Minette, Alabama, Mona lived a life marked by creativity, compassion, and deep devotion to her family and friends.

Mona was the beloved wife of the late Dennis Cothran and the cherished daughter of Dwight Moody "Buck" Harris, Jr. and Joy D. Harris Jones. She is survived by her three daughters: Bridgette (Preston) Pylant of Athens, AL; April (Cale) Haggard of Elkmont, AL; and Lisa (Dennis) Freeman of Scottsville, KY. Mona's legacy continues through her five adored grandchildren-Andrew and Jackson Pylant, Elizabeth and Jordan Freeman, and Cashton Haggard-each of whom brought immense joy to her life.

She is also lovingly remembered by her brother Mike (Carol) Harris and sister Summer (Johnny) Hartzog; as well as her much-loved nieces and nephews and a wide circle of extended family and dear friends.

Mona dedicated several years of service to Athens Limestone Hospital, where she contributed with the same warmth and care that defined every aspect of her life. Her nurturing spirit extended far beyond the workplace-she was a devoted mother and grandmother whose love knew no bounds.

A gifted artist at heart, Mona found joy in painting folk art pieces such as birdhouses and gourds that she often gifted to those around her. Her hands were rarely still-she spent countless hours knitting and crocheting scarves, hats, throws, and other handmade treasures that became keepsakes for family and friends alike. Gardening was another passion that brought her peace and fulfillment.

Mona had an extraordinary ability to connect with others over shared interests. One of her most enduring friendships began online through social media-a bond that grew into a cherished real-life relationship despite the physical distance between them. Other meaningful connections were formed during one of the most difficult periods in her life: the illness and eventual passing of her husband Dennis in 2015. These friendships became sources of strength rooted in mutual understanding and support.

In recent years, Mona found comfort in the companionship of her faithful pup Beni. Their bond was a source of solace after Dennis' passing-a quiet presence that brought light into even the hardest days.

Those who knew Mona will remember her as kind-hearted, creative, generous with her time and talents, and deeply loyal to those she loved. Her memory lives on not only in the beautiful things she made but also in the lives she touched so profoundly.

May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her. A Visitation will be held on May 9, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 02:00 PM at Spry Funeral Home 804 Highway 72 West, Athens, AL with a Memorial Service immediately after. Burial will be at Antioch Cemetery, Elkmont, Alabama.
