I was a new Fire Control Technician when I reported to the USCG cutter Minnetonka in Long Beach CA in Dec 66 . Almost the first person I saw was a tall , right-out-of central-casting , Chief Petty Officer . I was short and an unlikely sailor, and wondered if I was going to look " like that " after a few years ? Two years later , and after the tour in Vietnam , I still did not look like him, but I was proud to have been on the ship with him ! So long, Chief ! Ira Nelson (FT)

Served with Chief Watkins aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Minnetonka in 1965 and 66. He was a good Boatswain Mate. Rest in peace Chief in the arms of our savior. I have a slide show of the Minnetonka I think his children would like to have. Contact me if you are interested. [email protected]
