Monica HUGHES Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 11, 2003.
HUGHES, Monica Mary C.M. November 3, 1925 - March 7, 2003 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Monica Hughes, age 77, on Friday, March 7, 2003, at the University of Alberta Hospital. Monica joins her mother Phyllis; her father Edward; her sister Elizabeth; and her dear friends Sydney and Adrienne Anderson, in heaven. She is lovingly remembered by her husband Glen; her children Elizabeth (Tom), Adrienne, Russ (Jeane), and Tom (Laura); her grandchildren Melissa (Curtis), Katherine, Sarah, Crissy (Cam), Steve (Erica), Christopher, and Kyle; and her great-grandchildren Jordyn and Skeeter (soon to be born). Monica touched the lives, hearts, and imaginations of those young and old around the world through her writing and talks. She authored over thirty-five novels, many short stories, and articles. Her works were published in up to fifteen languages. She was the recipient of numerous literary awards including The Canada Council Children's Literature Prize, The Silver Feather Award, and The Phoenix Award. Most recently she was honoured with the Order of Canada and the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal. Her love, care, and charity were not only reflected in her writing, but throughout her life by service and devotion to the community. She worked tirelessly to support many causes, particularly Development and Peace, Pen Canada, and Amnesty International. She was a member of the Weaver's Guild and had won prizes for her weaving and tapestries. She was a talented watercolour artist. Her love and appreciation of the arts was all encompassing. Monica was quite modest about her talents and accomplishments. She would not have cared for us to brag about her, but now we feel we are quite justified in doing so. We would like to thank the EMTs, the doctors and nurses of the ER and ward 5F, and the Pastoral Team at the University of Alberta Hospital for their care and compassion. Monica's family invites all her friends and fans to help us celebrate her life on Saturday, March 15, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. The service will be held at St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church, 12810-111 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta. In lieu of flowers, and as a reflection of her passion for social justice, Monica requested donations be made to Development and Peace, c/o The Catholic Pastoral Centre of Edmonton, 8421-101 Avenue, Edmonton, AB T6A 0L1, phone (780) 469-1010.
