Dr. Momaday and his work had a HUGE influence on me- starting as an undergraduate and continuing on through my grad work, my teaching career, and indeed my entire life. He was a truly great man, but he remained humble and listened carefully to every person with whom he came into contact- including me! I was so lucky to be his student and friend. He will be greatly missed!

Mr Momaday wrote a letter of recommendation for me for graduate school when I was an undergraduate at UC Berkeley in 1974. When he was an incredibly nice and caring person who didn’t suffer fools gladly
My condolences and sympathy to his family and friends. We will not see his like again

I met Dr. Momaday at the airport in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and drove him to Southwest Minnesota State University, where he would be doing a Reading and speaking about his experiences. I learned a great deal from him on the 90 minute drive. I learned about Kiowa history and culture. I learned his Kiowa name is the Kiowa name for the core of a Volcano called Devils Tower. He wrote a book called, Names.
A man that I did not know except that he wrote a Pulitzer Prize book called, House Made of Dawn, became someone I would respect and feel honored to have known him.
