Nadeem Audeh Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 23 to Oct. 26, 2022.
Dr. Nadeem Audeh Feb. 11, 1932-Oct. 17, 2022 Nadeem (Ned) Fawzi Audeh passed away suddenly on October 17, 2022, while visiting family and friends in Jordan. He went for a walk with family. Afterwards, they stopped for a snack, he reclined, and passed peacefully. He was 90 years old. Ned was born in Qalqilya, Palestine on February 11, 1932. He came from a big family with nine brothers and sisters. In his early 20s, Ned came to the United States for college. After graduating from South Dakota State University with his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, he went to Iowa State University for his PhD. While there, he met his wife, Beverly Joan Birchmier and they married in 1962 in London, England. They settled in Huntsville, AL in 1964 and Ned joined the faculty of the University of Alabama Huntsville in the Department of Engineering, eventually becoming Dean of the Engineering College. Ned and Beverly had two children, Malik Douglas and Yara Mariam. He retired from UAH but remained active in the university community. Ned lived life to the absolute fullest! Shortly after moving to Alabama, Ned bought a boat and spent every weekend on the Tennessee River water skiing with his friends and family. He loved to bike and often went on long bike rides with friends. He discovered snow skiing in his 60s and shared this with his family. The family spent a few weeks a year skiing which Ned looked forward to each year. One of his favorite things was skiing with his grandchildren. Throughout his life, Ned was an avid traveler, visiting five of the seven continents and too many countries to count. He made lifelong friends on each of his trips. In his 80s, Ned decided to learn Spanish, which would be his third language. He started casually, but soon began taking college classes, did a 6-week Spanish immersion trip to Seville, Spain, and found ways to practice his Spanish any time he could. At the time of his death, he was enrolled in a Spanish course at UAH and had worked on his school assignments even while on his trip, wanting to make sure he kept his grades up. Ned was a role model to so many. He educated numerous undergraduate and graduate students. He inspired people he met in his travels and adventures. He was a light that shone so brightly. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Audeh; his children Malik Audeh (Elizabeth Tsai) and Yara Park (Harry Park) as well as his grandchildren, James Park and Andrew Park. A celebration and memorial will be held on November 19th from 11AM-3PM at Terranova's Italian Restaurant in Huntsville and the family invites visitors to drop in any time during that period. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be given to the Nadeem F Audeh and Beverly J Audeh Scholarship at the UAH College of Engineering (https://uah.givingfuel.com/give).

I knew Dr. Audeh from assignments at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. My earliest recollection of our meeting would have been around 1986 when our department was pursuing a computer network called "Sperry Omninet" at UAH. At the time that was brand new technology when early IBM clone computers retailed for around $3,000 each. Our's was the first office implementation of this technology, but Dr. Audeh was a seasoned pro with the network technology in a lab environment. He was willing to work with us to get the basic skills down for the Omninet system and from there we had a successful implementation. We spent several hours on the phone and at his lab and it was always a treat to work with him. It wasn't unusual to see him "out and about" in public as he was a very active person. He always had a smile on his face and a warm word for me every time we met. I know it has been a few years since his passing, and it has been 15 years since my retirement from UAH, so time has gotten by as those work connections have deteriorated over the passing of time. I will always appreciate his help, encouragement and the support he gave to his co-workers and the love it was obvious he had for the institution and its students. He will be deeply missed.

I first met Ned at the wellness center in Jones Valley. He became a dear friend. I was amazed about his passion for everything life has to offer. We discussed travel. We would meet for lunch. His favorite place is Panera bread. Few days before his trip to Jordan we met for lunch. I am going miss him so much.

I am so sorry about Ned ... a friend from UAH for over 40 years I can still remember seeing him out in his boat at an alumni picnic and other times on the river. He would always come by and say hello. He was such a smart, kind, and sweet man who will be missed by so many.

I only knew Ned for the three short semesters of Spanish courses we took together at UAH, but I will always remember him. I was constantly amazed by his compassion and deep love of life. He had only ever shown me kindness and somehow always knew how to brighten a person's day. He will very much be missed.

I am in Spanish class with Ned this semester, and this was our third Spanish class together at UAH. Ned always had a smile on his face and was one of the most friendly people I have ever met. He was very determined to learn Spanish, even at age 90, and I very much respected him for that. Ned and I had gotten to know each other in class and I Had even told my family and friends about Ned and how great he was! Turns out, he lived one street over from me here in Huntsville. I enjoyed hearing about Ned´s life and all of his accomplishments in class and I am going to miss speaking to him each week. He was such a bright light, and he will be very missed!

Nadeem was a good friend and a sharp conversation partner. We met regularly for lunch until the pandemic. Was over 80 when he signed up for a walking tour to Machu Pichu. They would not allow him to do it but I am sure he could have done it with flying colours. I will miss him much.

I first came to know Professor Audeh in 2016 at the Jones Valley Wellness Center. We became friends almost immediately. I was in awe of his physical fitness, positive outlook, friendly demeanor, energy, good humor, and enthusiasm. In short, Ned was the model that everyone looked up to in the gym. I often told him that I hoped to be as young as he was some day. I had taken up road bicycling the prior year and Ned readily invited me to ride along with him. Over the past 6 years, he and I shared many rides together in the county and on the Arsenal. Along the way he encouraged me in cycling and mentored me on many aspects of life. He always showed genuine care and concern for everyone he knew. Ned exemplified the best aspects of human character - honesty, integrity, perseverance, and indomitable spirit. May he rest in peace. He was my cycling partner. He was my friend.

I can to UAH in 1977 where I met Ned for the first time, and he invited me for lunch. We had lunch together every week since then for 45 years. I never had a friend like Ned before or every again, I was truly blessed by the times we were together.
I learned so much from him and there was nothing we didn't talk about. I treasure the Auden family as my own. I and thankful to God for bring them into my live. His chair will remain in our shed!

Ned was our dear friend, and my role model. A year ago I helped him submit his course assignments in Canvas, and he taught me how to get a recreational pass for biking on Arsenal. I expected to share life experiences with him in many years to come, but he left us wonderful memories.

Ned was a true example on how to live life, on and with purpose! He would light up a room when he entered. Being one of the friendliest and most active people I know, Ned was one of my Zumba students, when I taught at Jones Valley Wellness Center. We all loved him and I know he´ll be missed by me and everyone he danced with, in class. Rest in paradise, Ned!

I met Ned a few years ago through our friends Nancy and Charlie. The times we were in each other´s company was full of joy and laughter. Not only was he knowledgeable on so many subjects but he exuded a love for life. Every conversation we had I learned something. I´m grateful that I knew him. He makes me smile even now.

Ned,

What a wonderful man. From the first to the last time moment that I had with Ned; he had a way about him that made you feel welcomed at all times. Somehow, it seemed that we would have a chance for another chat with tea. Thank you Audeh family for sharing him with us.

Ned was the most cheerful and upbeat guy at the Wellness Center Gym. It was always a joy to see him there and have a pleasant chat. Ned brought a smile to everyone´s face when they saw him.

My sympathy to Ned´s family. I was one of the many people Ned befriended on 2 bicycle trips to Europe. I am saddened by the news of Ned´s death. He was the kind of energetic and curious person that enjoyed life to the fullest.
It seems that he would have gone on forever. Norma Skye, Florida
