Nancy Ellis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 19, 2024.
Nancy Nealon Ellis passed away on August 2, 2024, on Nantucket, Massachusetts at the age of 74. Born on November 1, 1949, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Nancy was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, and mother. She enjoyed taking nature walks and biking with her husband on Nantucket and in NYC's Central Park and reading, baking, and celebrating birthdays and holidays with her daughters and grandchildren. She had strong faith in God, attending St. Ignatius Loyola in NYC and St. Mary, Our Lady of the Isle Catholic Church on Nantucket.

Nancy was also passionate about her career as a neurologist. She specialized in personalized patient care, migraine management, and multiple sclerosis. Dedicated to providing exceptional care for her patients, Nancy was certified in both internal medicine and neurology and completed two fellowships. Over her 40-year career in NYC, she had a private practice and then worked at The Iris Cantor Women's Health Center and The Judith Jaffe Multiple Sclerosis Center, both at Weill Cornell. She was also an associate professor of clinical neurology at Weill Cornell Medical College. Nancy cared deeply about her patients and the medical students she mentored, and she worked hard throughout her career to improve the lives of others.

Nancy leaves behind her husband of 44 years, Dr. George Caldwell Ellis; her daughters, Adrienne Ellis Renteria and Katherine Ellis McDermott; her son-in-laws, Ryan Renteria and James McDermott; and grandchildren, Rafa and Lily Renteria, and Maya McDermott. Nancy is also survived by her sisters, Ranny Ferguson of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Mary Carey Kluttz of Charlotte, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her brother, William Carey Nealon, and her parents, William Kennedy Nealon and Rita Carey Nealon, along with her in-laws, Marian Caldwell Ellis and John Taylor Ellis.

A service celebrating her life will be held at The Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in Manhattan at 1 pm on Sunday, November 24th. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Nancy's memory can be made to MS Stand-Up/The Mind Brain Philanthropic Foundation, The Lewy Body Dementia Association, and The Central Park Conservatory. Nancy's legacy will continue through her family, her contributions to medical science, and the many lives she touched.

25 years ago, my brother was suffering from acute Lyme disease and it had progressed to the point of great pain and paralysis in his face. He had no money and had nowhere to go, but Dr. Nealon opened her office and saw him and treated him and cured him and then in her typical fashion never sent a bill. She was truly a remarkable doctor and great human being. I was so sorry to learn of her passing. Susie Hermanson. Jackson Wyoming

I was a patient of Dr. Nealon's from when she was in private practice up to her retirement. A memory that will remain with me was the beginning of the Memorial Day weekend of 2000 when I was leaving work with plans for the holiday and my phone rang, I wasn't going to answer but I did, it was Dr. Nealon telling me that my MRI result indicated a brain tumor and she had scheduled an appointment with a Neuro-surgeon for the following Tuesday. It was a surprise but she assured me that I would be alright and I am up to today. I will never forget Dr. Nealon and the care I received over the years. I visited her just before her retirement, and as our appointment ended, she escorted me to the exit and as was customary our visit ended with a hug. I was so very sad when I was told of her passing. My condolences to her family.
