RALEIGH — Nancy Bryan Faircloth, 79, died at her home in Raleigh on Friday night.
Born in New York City, she was raised in Greensboro. Mrs. Faircloth graduated from Hollins College, Roanoke, VA. in 1952. Soon after graduation she was hired as a researcher with Fortune Magazine in New York, where she worked until moving back to North Carolina in 1967.
In a very quiet way, Mrs. Faircloth helped many people: family, friends, and strangers. She also had a knack for taking a personal interest in those whose paths she crossed. From the handyman to whom she made a dedication on WCPE to the lawyer who sent her irreverent cards, folks formed lasting bonds with Mrs. Faircloth. She understood the seriousness of life but tried hard never to take herself too seriously. She strove for stillness and simplicity.
Mrs. Faircloth is survived by her daughter, Anne Faircloth, son-in-law Fred Beaujeu-Dufour, and grandchildren, Nancy and Julian, all of Clinton, N.C.; her brother, Joseph McKinley Bryan, Jr. of Greensboro; three nephews and five nieces.
Her family wishes to extend profound thanks and sincere gratitude to all the friends who helped make Mrs. Faircloth comfortable and gave her life a lift: Dr. James Parsons, Fr. Phil Tighe, Martina Young, the Bill Blankinship Family, Kathy Aalfs, Julie Sutherland and many more.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 23, 11 a.m. at Alliance Medical Ministry, 101 Donald Ross Drive, Raleigh.

I'd like to send all my love to my cousin Nancy's family. This is the passing of a truly authentic person with a big, big personality and an enormous capacity for empathy and generosity. I will miss all of our thought provoking conversations, but I will never forget.

Although Aunt Nancy had her own medical issues to deal with, she still managed to call and checking in me often. Her kindness has helped me as I fight my battle with GBM.

I had the pleasure of working with Nancy in Clinton as we tried to expand the arts by programming a variety of Sunday Happenings at the Doctor Small Cultural Center, better known as The Small House. She was always interested in helping to bring cultural events to our town and showed genuine impatience if things became dormant and stopped growing. I have missed her imput and enthusiasm since she left, for she did leave a void. Thankfully, her daughter has accepted the torch.

On behalf of the board, staff and clients of Urban Ministries of Wake County, I would like to extend sincere condolences to the family of Nancy Faircloth. She has been a faithful friend of the poor and needy in our community. Her concern and generosity touched so many people in poverty and made their quality of life so much better. She was an angel in gardening gloves and an old VW Cabriolet. We will sorely miss her presence in this world.

Nancy was a great friend and an indomitable spirit. I had the pleasure of being the recipient of her great knowledge and wisdom. As with everything in her life, she was incredibly giving. Her passion for the plight of the less fortunate drove her to share and give back. Farewell my friend, I can't light your cigarette any more or bring you coconut cake; but I'll never forget you!

Nancy was a very kind, thoughtful and spiritual person. She helped so many people in so many ways and always insisted on remaining anonymous. She had a marvelous intellect and a depth of character and caring that is all too rare. I considered her a friend and I will miss her. God speed!
