Nancy Hayes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 2 to Jun. 3, 2012.
Nancy Lee Clarke Hayes August 11, 1923-May 27, 2012 Nancy Clarke Hayes was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Carl and Marzie Clarke. After graduating with her B.A. from Wellesley College, Nancy lived in Taos, NM where she ran the La Fonda Art Gallery. She moved to San Francisco in the early 1950's and worked at an advertising agency until she received her M.A. from the University of California-Berkeley. With a love for social studies, especially art history, Nancy taught at Portola Junior High, Poly High, and for many years at Lowell High School where she was a "popular and well-respected" teacher. Throughout her life, Nancy traveled extensively, participated actively in Global Volunteers programs, served as a docent at the MOMA, played the cello, and enjoyed walking in Lafayette Park with her various dogs. In March of 2011, Nancy suffered a serious stroke at which time her family moved her to Colorado Springs, Colorado to be closer to them. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister, Carolyn Clarke Church. She is survived by her nieces, Nancy Church Whetstone (Mike), Janet Church Harrison (Scott), her great nephew and nieces, Eric Whetstone, Andrea Whetstone, Jennifer Harrison and Beth Harrison. As a member of the Neptune Society, Nancy has been cremated and requested no services. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting contributions in her memory to Lowell Alumni Association, PO Box 320009, San Francisco, CA, 94132.

Nancy was my mentor. When I first came to
Lowell, she was one who greeted me with smiles, took me to coffee and helped me, a teacher new to the school. She was always warm and caring.

Thank you Nancy for paving the way for me...I shall never forget you.

I worked with Nancy at both Portola Junior High and Lowell. She was a role model for a young teacher: creative and witty, generous with her time and energy. At Portola she helped form the "Know Your City Club" for our students from the Portola and Bayview districts. After school, kids would crowd into the cars of volunteer parents and teachers to visit Golden Gate park museums, local businesses, fire houses, the main library, places they had never visited and would not have been able to go to on their own. Any kid could join, all were gifted. Thank you, Nancy for your inspiration.

I taught with Nancy Hayes at Polytechnic High School and Lowell High School. Not only was she a great teacher, but she was a strong union member and a fellow picketer with me. RIP. Marian Gonzalez
