Nancy Roberts Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2024.
Nancy Lynn Roberts passed away July 29, 2024 at the age of 75 in Alameda, California from complications of Alzheimer's disease. A loving wife, sister, mother, and grandmother, Nancy was adored by all who had the privilege to know her. She disliked nobody, and nobody disliked Nancy.

Nancy was born to Walter and Shirley Hutchinson on May 14, 1949 in Concord, California. Her love of books, reading, and learning started at a young age. Nancy graduated from Clayton Valley High School in 1967 and then went on to study at UC Santa Barbara where she graduated with an English major. Her professional career started as an English teacher at Dublin High School before moving closer to her first true love, books. At the Alameda Free Library, she served the community for several decades as a librarian and administrator of the Homebound program. Combining her strengths of thoughtfulness and literary knowledge, Nancy would curate books for each patron who could not physically visit the library. She received Christmas cards from her recipients, many of whom said her deliveries were the only thing that kept them going.

Nancy was married 49 years to the love of her life, husband Craig. They married and settled in Alameda. Their first dates included roller derby and a hockey game (Craig did the planning early on).

They had son Glen in 1981 and daughter Corinne in 1985. She served as PTA president, attended every track meet and soccer game, helped with homework, and read books before bedtime. She asked her kids about their day over dinner, which she cooked and served every day at 6pm sharp. For 3-4 months out of the year, Craig's job took him overseas, requiring Nancy to do all of the above single-handed, yet she was never tired or flustered. While she was heavily involved in her children's lives, she also raised them to be independent and hard-working adults.

Nancy had two young grand-daughters, Avery (5) and Ellis (almost 3), and two young grandsons, Walter (4) and Nolan (almost 2). Her time with them was cut tragically short by her illness. She would have been the most wonderful grandmother and her grandchildren will be raised knowing the mark their "Grammy" had on everyone around her.

One of her defining personality traits was her witty sense of humor, which often contained grammar or vocabulary themes. Her creativity was displayed in everything, from a riddle tagged onto a quick email to the custom invitations to her annual cookie party. Although generally soft-spoken, Nancy wasn't shy about her love of chocolate and ice cream (preferably together). Perhaps the greatest testament to Nancy's character was the longevity and variety of her female friendships. Nancy remained close with her best high school girlfriends, including European adventures together as recently as 2017. Over the last few decades, Nancy formed lasting friendships through shared interests including bridge, cooking, walking, and of course, books. Many of her friends were regular visitors at her bedside up through her final days.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Craig, two children Glen and Corinne, their spouses Bonnie and Jason, four grandchildren Avery, Walter, Ellis, and Nolan, and brother John. She was sister-in-law to Suzanne Hutchinson, Julie Roberts, Lee Roberts, and Donald Gutleben, and loving aunt to their children.

A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held at the Harbor Bay Community Center at 3195 Mecartney Road in Alameda at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in remembrance of Nancy Roberts to the Alameda Free Library: https://interland3.donorperfect.net/weblink/weblink.aspx?name=E354345&id=42

I FIRST MET Nancy when her daughter, Corrine, played soccer with my son, Ryan. They were both playing for a team called the "Pink Panthers" with pink team shirts and very small soccer balls. Nancy was cheering for Corrine, and I found myself cheering for Corrine too. What an athlete!

I saw Nancy at school functions from elementary school up to high school. We both brought in cupcakes, helped at school functions and attended assemblies. I remember Nancy taking photos at Grad Night while I gave out door prizes. Those years seem to have flown by.

Nancy and I lived close to each other, and I used to see her take her daily walks. She walked twice a day and always looked so full of pep. I used to drag myself around the block once a day. She was way more motivated than I. I wish that I had her energy.

Nancy and I shared a love of sweets -especially cookies. The highpoint of the holiday season was her Christmas Cookie Party. I remember having an argument with my manager at Xerox Corporation because he wanted me to stay late to write part of a proposal for a customer. The appointment was the next morning, but I was afraid that I was going to be late to Nancy´s Christmas Cookie Party. I made it on time to get everyone´s delicious cookies and have a couple Fuzzy Navel cocktails.

Nancy was a great organizer. She organized monthly dinners at various ethnic restaurants. Our group of women was very diverse and so were the restaurants. Nancy was the hostess and made sure that we all had a chance to speak. She was a leader in her own quiet way.

I guess that the one event that sticks out in my memory was when I was a volunteer in Ibarra, Ecuador in 2004. I lived with a Spanish family in Ibarra and all my students spoke Spanish. All of the newspapers and magazines were written in Spanish. After about 4 months, I was desperate to read some English. So, I went to an Internet café and called Nancy. I was looking for some mystery novels to read in ENGLISH. I asked her if she could send some to me in Ibarra, Ecuador. She said, "Yes". I was not even sure if the postal service could find Ibarra. But one day, there was a box of books for me. I read each book three or four times.

Only another English teacher would have understood what it was like to be isolated in South America without anything to that was easy to read. Nancy and I both loved trying to figure out "Who Did It?" These were before the times of cell phones or Kindles.

I miss Nancy. It is always difficult to lose a friend. I know that she would have loved to take her grandchildren to the park or museums or an animated movie. I am sure that a few mystery books and ice cream cones would have been included too. The photo attached was taken at Loard´s Ice Cream Shop. Nancy and I enjoyed a Loard´s ice cream sundae together. Her sense of humor and smile will be missed.

Nancy was a treasure to all who knew her and enriched our lives with her brilliant mind and kind, calm logic. I know I will never forget the twice weekly walks to took early in the morning when the day was just beginning.

Nancy always was poised and lovely! I remember taking the ferry to San Francisco and running into Nancy and Craig who told us they did this day trip frequently to have a bit of an adventure together. They were so happy to enjoy the excursion together.
