Dr. Russell was my professor in the Department of Early Childhood Education at Texas A&I University in Kingsville from 1991 to 1993. I was part of the last graduating class before the university's name changed to Texas A&M in the fall of 1993. Dr. Russell was my favorite professor, and I learned so much from her. Many of us enrolled in three to four of her classes each semester, which allowed us to build a strong connection. She was extremely kind and genuinely cared about us, our futures and careers. She greatly prepared me for my role as a Pre-Kindergarten teacher and overall good educator, more than anyone else.
After my first fall semester, I needed to find a new roommate, and she helped me with that. When I returned from winter break in my second year, someone had broken into my small home behind my landlord´s property. She insisted that I stay with her for a few days until I could find a new place for my last semester. I remember her giving me a pair of Reebok athletic shoes-she mentioned they were for her daughter but she wouldn´t wear them with the brand logo showing. I´m not sure if that was true, but I appreciated any new shoes I received. As a low-income student determined to succeed and be independent, her support meant a lot to me.
With Dr. Russell´s loving guidance and remarkable teaching, I was able to achieve these goals. Without her influence, my life might have looked very different. I spent four years as a primary school teacher, 17 years as a counselor in various levels including elementary, middle, high school, and early college high school, and eight years as a college director. I wish I had spoken with her again before her passing to share all of this and thank her once more. She will always hold a very special place in my heart. Thank you, Jennifer, for sharing your mother with us. She was like a second mother to me for those two years. I am deeply sorry for your loss. She was a remarkable woman, and I am continually impressed by all her accomplishments, especially considering she was legally blind.
