Nancy Willard Obituary

Nancy Willard

POUGHKEEPSIE - The well-known writer, Nancy Willard, died peacefully at her home in Poughkeepsie on February 19. Her death resulted from natural causes, according to her husband, Eric Lindbloom.

Ms. Willard's published more than 70 books, poetry, children's books, short stories,

novels, essays and criticism, in a career that spanned over fifty years. Her last children's book is due out this fall. She was also published in a number of limited-edition books, some of them with her poems paired with photographs by her husband, with Brighton Press in San Diego. Her poems are widely anthologized.

She received a number of awards for her books, the most prominent being the Newbery Award in 1982 for her William Blake's Inn, illustrated by Alice & Martin Provensen.

It was the first poetry book to be awarded the Newbery. Ms. Willard received grants from the N.E.A. in both poetry and fiction.

She joined Vassar College's English Department in 1965, and taught there through the fall semester of 2012. She taught full time for the first eight years, but then went part-time in order to have more time with her two-year old son, James, and the writing. Towards the end of her Vassar career she taught classes on special interest to herself, Fairy Tales and Medieval Tapestries. Ms. Willard never learned to drive a car - believing the world was a safer place with her not driving - and became known as 'the lady on the bicycle' in the Vassar neighborhood. For about two decades she taught at the Breadloaf Writers Conference each summer.

Ms. Willard was born on June 26, 1936 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Her father, Hobart Willard, was a chemist who taught at the University of Michigan. Her mother, Margaret Sheppard, who said Nancy came out of womb writing, was hugely supportive of her writing as a child. She graduated from the University of Michigan with highest honors, and went on to earn an MA from Stanford. She returned to the University of Michigan to earn her PhD. Her dissertation was on the use of physical objects in the poetry of Rilke, William Carlos Williams, Neruda, and Francis Ponge. It was published as Testimony of the Invisible Man, by the University of Missouri Press. On a number of summers during her college years she studied painting abroad, in Paris, Oslo, and San Miguel de Allende.

In 1964 she eloped with Eric, who had been pursuing her for nine years; they settled in Poughkeepsie, NY, which became home base for the rest of her life.. Their son, James Anatole Lindbloom, was born in 1970. Her sister, Ann Willard Korfhage, pre-deceased her. She is survived by her cousin Sue Wehmeier, nephews Willard Korfhage and David Korfhage, and nieces Margaret Fitzgerald and Lisa Pannell, and sisters-in-law Jean Jacobson and Ann LaRue.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, April 29, at 2 in the afternoon, at the Poughkeepsie Friends Meeting House. Arrangements are under the direction of Wm. G. Miller & Son F.H., Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. If you wish to send an online condolence please visit our website at www.wmgmillerfuneralhome.com

She is one of the treasures of the heart of the world. Nancy's poems and stories and presence was/is a source of magic - the real magic that renders us more human. Trying to find a particular poem this morning, deciding to finally write to thank her.. I discovered that Nancy had died and was shocked .. but then calmed by the knowledge that she remains always with us as inspiration. She will be deeply missed by family, neighbors, students.. perhaps the moon herself will have to force itself out under the laundry back into the world for all of us as Nancy would have wanted. I want to acknowledge the tremendous inspiration she had in my life and storytelling. Laura Simms

Ms. Willard was a huge part of the reason I'm a published author. She remains one of my favorite Vassar professors

Lucky world, to have had Nancy Willard's presence and her particular enchantments. Lucky us, to have her books as evidence that such a rare, generous-minded soul actually walked among us. Meeting her was a quiet, lively privilege. Reading her is a perennial joy.

Dear Eric,
I'm so sorry for your loss. Nancy gave so much to so many of us. I'm grateful for her friendship and for the time we spent together when I was a student at Vassar. Sharing Nancy's children's books and poems with my son Aidan over the years has been a joy.
Thinking of you and your family,

She was a true angel on earth. She came to teach at Hollins when I was there and we shared a house there for two weeks.... she couldn't have been kinder and more in love with life and beauty.

I feel so fortunate to have known her. Each encounter was a delight. Vassar and Poughkeepsie have lost a ray of sunshine who warmed and charmed all she met.

The world has lost some magic. So glad I got to meet the magnificent Nancy Willard, and so grateful for the words and love she leaves behind for all of us. I cherish the angel she painted for me on the flyleaf of one of her books, the most beautiful autograph ever. Wishing comfort and peace of heart to Eric, to her family, and to everyone who misses her.

Eric, this was the first year in over fifty that your Christmas card did not arrive with reassurance that you were well and thriving, and so I looked you up online just to see your faces once again. I am more saddened than I can say, and I can only imagine what a loss this is to you. I feel blessed that we were able to meet at the Hopwood anniversary celebration in Ann Arbor just a few years ago, and it feels like only a few more years ago that we were all in Ann Arbor together with the bright future still ahead. I marvel to think of all that Nancy accomplished. The world now seems a smaller place. John also sends his condolences and we both send our love to you and your family.

Nancy Willard visited the summer graduate program in children's literature at Hollins University. She inspired writers in their interest in sharing great stories with young readers. She attended seminars, answered questions, read our work, signed fan autographs (we are ALL fans) & for me offered encouragement about a poem on bears. I read the poet she suggested (Galway Kinell if I remember correctly, apologies for online spelwrecker.) I show her autograph + drawing in school; she drew a magical moon with her signature on my copy of NIGHTGOWN of the SULLEN MOON. I treasure the memory of meeting her. Thank you with a million billion dancing stars, Nancy Willard.

Oh! I just learned of you today from one of your poems in a book of Ted Kooser's. I immediately looked you up, and....you're not here anymore! Such a beautiful poem. But I also discovered this quote: "I haven't a clue how my story will end, but that's all right. When you set out on a journey and night covers the road, that's when you discover the stars." It's obvious you had a beautiful spirit. I felt so sad. My heart goes out to those close to you.

Nancy Willard's books are magical in the best sense of the word. We loved reading them to our children, now our grandchild, and grateful that our daughter and son-in-law had a chance to know her as a teacher and mentor at Vassar. She will be missed.

Nancy Dearest. Thank you for introducing me to your angels. For visiting me in my dreams when storms raged. Thank you for sending me all those letters and cards when I was trying to get those angels to hold still. You brought the lightest of feathers to this heavy world.

AND, before our very eyes showed us how to make fire out of words, and stories out of pain.

You the rider of burning tigers in the forests of the night,

Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?"

It was Nancy who made me be a poet, way back when, at Vassar. Her poetry, stories, and essays will continue to inspire many budding writers. I am very lucky to have known her in person, as a teacher and a friend, over all these many years. She continues to light the way for us. We just have to keep looking and listening with our hearts. Thank you, Nancy.

I remember Nancy as a supportive, caring, and patient adviser who kept in touch for many years. She was a strong role model for me throughout my own career as college teacher and adviser. May fond memories of her sustain you, her family and friends.

Dear, Dear Nancy, we will miss you so very much. You warmed our hearts again and again, welcoming us into your world of delight and wonder.

I always hoped to see you at any event, to hear a story, or a nimble comment on life's curiosities. You would make us both laugh until we had tears. I thought the world of you, miss you, and will continue to in my fondest memories,

Love,

Oh Eric, we're so sad for you and James and everyone; the loss is general. I can't get my mind around the fact of Nancy's departure; she seemed the very essence of enduring youth. Of freshness in the world. Of sweet vivacity. There's nothing useful, is there, to say: please know that your silence is shared.

Oh Nancy, another star has fallen from the sky. I was speaking of you just this weekend to a friend at a conference. You blazed trails, made us laugh, taught us to love the oddities in life.

Will forever treasure the memory of our road trip in aid of our angels.

Keep your feathers dry.

And keep on flying.

We lost a very special woman this past weekend. Nancy inspired children and adults by leading us on magical adventures through her children's books. She encouraged fantasy and imagination at its finest, and believed that every human had important stories to tell. She cajoled generations of Vassar students to follow their unique imaginations, and to ask questions more than seek answers. She led us on journeys, teaching us to worry less about the destination. Godspeed, Nancy. Thank you for making sure we had so many fantastical journeys to share with our children and grandchildren.
