Narayanan Subramanian Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 18, 2025.
Dr. Narayanan "Mani" Subramanian passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025, in Wellesley, Massachusetts at the age of 79.

Mani was born on June 22, 1946, in Thiruvananthapuram, India. He earned degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in New Delhi, India; the Birla Institute of Technology & Science in Pilani; and the University of New Hampshire in Durham, New Hampshire. He then embarked on a 40+ year career at DuPont, primarily at its headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware. He specialized in researching new methods of producing titanium dioxide, and held several patents for his process innovations.

Despite these professional accomplishments, Mani's priority was always his family. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Padma Subramanian; his son, Guhan Subramanian and his wife Helen Clement; and his daughter, Dr. Yamini Levitzky and her husband Dr. Benjamin Levitzky. He also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: Sam, Lily, Mina, Nate, and Rachel.

A service will be held on 43 Fairmont Avenue in Newton, Massachusetts on Sunday, September 28th at 10:30 am with luncheon to follow at 1 pm. A second religious service will be held at the Hindu temple at 760 Yorklyn Rd, Hockessin, Delaware on Friday, October 3rd at noon, with lunch following at 2 pm. Friends and family are welcome at both remembrances of his life.

Very sad to hear this news. Dr Subramanian always radiated the calm confidence of a man that truly achieved all of his dreams. He was immensely proud of his family, had the chance to retire and spend time with his grandkids in Boston. May you rest in peace, my friend. Keep smiling.

Angela and I were traveling outside of the country when Mani passed, so we unfortunately received the news a little late. But it can never be too late for us to express our deep sorrow at the loss of a dear friend and great collaborator. Mani was gushingly proud of his children and grandchildren, so I can imagine the deep sorrow that must attend this transition in your family. Mani was not just a friend; we enjoyed years of fruitful professional collaboration. But we were also kindred spirits who shared a similar philosophy about life. I will miss his regular calls for updates about people we both knew or to chit-chat about how to solve the world´s problems. I will most especially miss the Zoom calls after his retirement to Massachusetts.
Padma, may you and the family he proudly left behind have the fortitude to bear his loss. And may his children and grandchildren inherit the good fortune to carry on the tradition of excellence that marked his fruitful life.

I had the privilege of caring for Mani and meeting his wonderful wife, Padma. Mani was a wonderful person with a good sense of humor even when faced with difficulties. He was a very strong person and is in the light at this moment. Padma, a virtuous wife, cared for Mani with great love and dedication. My heart and prayers are with his entire family.

Naren and I came to know Mani just recently and we were immediately struck by how calmly and graciously he accepted his current state of being. I read somewhere that as soon as we are born, we begin our journey towards death, our final frontier, our final destination. Mani has reached his final destination and we hope that he is at peace, lovingly looking down on the family he left behind. Rest in peace!!

We are heartbroken to hear about Mani. We still remember when Mani and Padma moved to Wellesley 14 years ago. From that moment, it was clear that Mani was an extraordinary man. His positive energy was contagious; every interaction with him left us feeling uplifted and inspired.

His professional accomplishments were impressive, but what really stood out was his integrity and genuine care for others. He was such a loving husband, father, and grandfather, always cherishing his family. The warmth and kindness he shared with everyone will stay with us forever. We will miss him dearly.

Mani was a strong supporter of the Mahalakshmi Temple here in Delaware. He will be dearly missed by all of us. He was a dear friend of us( Chitra and Krishnan). His quiet demeanor was his characteristic. We will keep his family in our prayers. May Sree Mahalakshmi give strength to Padma and family to go through these tough times.

Mani and Padma were a pillar for the Hindu community in Delaware. Since their move to Boston, we have continued to be friends. Ram and I admire Mani´s diplomacy, kindness and spiritual outlook in all his activities. His quiet behind-the-scene support and generosity have contributed to the the HTA´s success enormously. Mani will be in our hearts for ever. Our deepest condolences to Padma, Guhan and Yamini.

We've only known Mani for a short few years with our first introduction happening on the Wellesley walkway.

He was a very smart, loving and witty person. Demanded the least from others but cared the most for them.

Padma has been a shining example of how a loving spouse can care for her husband, being at Mani's side every minute and caring and feeding him with utmost love.

We will miss Mani dearly and are here for any help we can offer to Padma in her life journey. Our deepest sympathies for her children, Guhan and Yamini and their children.
