My grandfather was a three war veteran.
I don´t remember him as a war veteran, although military order was very much a part of his life. I remember him as Granddaddy, the man who worked two jobs after he retired from the Army, and who was up on the latest in all things tech from cameras to music equipment to smartphones and tablets. I remember him surrounded by said technology in his man cave before that was what they were called.
I was blessed to spend 49 years with my grandfather. He left us a legacy of longevity. Believe me, I took notes. The most important thing in life is your relationship with people.
My grandfather never looked 103 until his final hours. I thank my parents for that. They took care of him.
This Veterans Day, I remember my grandfather, who died on November 2, and honor my parents, also veterans who served in the Army.
Thank you all for your service.
1) Granddaddy´s signature cap. He never went outside without it.
2) His hand in transition. It´s the only time my grandfather looked his age.
3) Granddaddy & me in late September, our last photo together.

The first time I met Mr. Allen. I was impressed on how he was concentrated in transferring family pictures, music, from old technology to a new format. To display throughout the house on different flat screens. At this time he was 89 years old. Later I noticed that nothing made Mr. Allen upset instead he laugh all the time. Born in 1919 as an African American man, he was the first African American to become a firefighter and later Fire Chief. This is only on small sample of life hurtles he had to over come. I loved listening to his life stories. Mr. Allen loved lima beans with corn bread. I do too. We often shared a plate
that I would bring.I will missed him dearly. He showed how me how to grow old with dignity and how to important it is to take care of one self, stay busy and be happy. My thoughts and prayers for the entire family.

I´ll always cherish my memory of walking by Nathan´s house and waving to him with a "Hi Nathan!" as he sat on the porch and watched the neighbors go by. Such a good man.
