Nathan Oliver Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 8 to Dec. 11, 2011.
Oliver, Nathan Paul Age 35, of Mpls, passed away December 4, 2011. Nathan was a very smart, funny and warm guy who never hesitated to help those who asked and, when he sensed it, those who didn't ask. Nate touched thousands of people's lives by sharing his knowledge and expertise in Microsoft Excel, and his brilliant programming techniques. Nate will be remembered not only for his technical expertise, but for his wry wit, his generous nature, his passion for sports, and his love of family. Preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Stanley & Lorain Oliver. Survived by his loving family, parents Paul and Lynda; twin sister Nicole (Adam) Snyder. He was the beloved "Uncle Naties" of Olivia and Macayle. Also survived by maternal grandparents, Claude & Betty Litt; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Courage Center. Memorial visitation Saturday, Dec. 17 from 4-6 PM, with a reception to follow, all at: Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel 952-920-3996 West 50th St. & Hwy 100

Nate was a great guy. Very saddened to hear of his passing. I was his college roommate for 2 years, and we had some good times together. He was a loyal friend and he made whatever we were doing together more fun. Rest in peace Nate.

I remember bowling with Nate for Adam and Nicole's pre-wedding festivities. He was gracious about my inability to hit pins. My heart goes out to the whole family. I know he was dearly loved and will be missed.

Dear Paul, Lynda, and Nicole,
There are no words to describe how sorry I am for your loss. Nate and I worked together for a number of years at American Express TBS. He was smart, respectful, witty, and he always had a smile. I consider him a friend, who just happened to be a business colleague.

Nate's brilliance with Excel is well documented, but we observed him take on most tasks with that same drive to be the best. He could have been "Mr. ______", with just about anything that caught his interest.

Some friends like to play tennis, Nate and I loved to debate. Instead of knocking a tiny ball back and forth, we did it with thoughts. Neither the topic nor the outcome really mattered, we just loved to play the game, and we always parted better friends than when we started.

Nate was a very special person and friend. We are blessed to have known him.

Dear Paul & Lynda.
You may remember me from Ardy and Al's place many years ago.
I am so sorry to read about Nate's passing. Losing a kid is an incredibly painful event - and particularly at this time of year, it must be so, so difficult for both of you and for Nicole. Personally, I cannot fathom the kind of loss you're enduring right now.
From everything I have read, and what Ardy and Al have told me, Nate sounded like a really good guy. He's definitely going to me missed.
Please accept my sincerest condolences at this terribly painful time.
You're all in my prayers.
Cam Johnston (Ardy's brother).

Even though I've met Nate more than 10 years ago in the old MrExcel forum, I never had the chance to meet him in person. Despite this, I was able to see what a fun, smart and family oriented guy he was. Our thoughts and prayers are with all his family during this difficult time.

I know Nate from the MVP (Microsoft Most Valuable Professional) world. It may be hard to comprehend for family members not being "into computers" that there is an online world out there with people like Nate volunteering their time to help others along. Most of the time these volunteers never make a face-to-face connection, but they still touch another human being across cyberspace. More than 10,000 answers in one forum alone, can you see how many lives he touched?
The annual MVP conference is a way for all 4000+ MVPs to come together. This is where I know Nate from. He easily crossed the line between the database folks (Access programmers like myself) and spreadsheet folks (his Excel buddies) in such a genuine way, he caught my eye as one of the exceptional ones who transcend the obvious rivalries and is just a GENUINELY NICE GUY. We will miss him all very much, and I have no doubt there will be a tribute of him next Summit in late February.
My heart especially goes out to his twin sister Nicole (twins being as close as they typically are). May the love of God guide you in this most difficult time.

I went to junior high school in Rosedale, BC, Canada with Nathan and Nicole! I have so many fond memories of Nathan! I was very saddened to hear of his passing. His life was taken away far before its time! A birthday of mine never went by without a message from Nate! A message I will truly miss on that day each year! My hugs and prayers go out to the Oliver family during this most difficult time!

To the Oliver and Litt families:

Despite living in the Twin Cities, I never met Nate in person. You have probably discovered that the MVP community is unique in that way! It's also unique in that most of the people in it love to share their knowledge and help people use technology, and Nate was no exception.

Nate was helpful, irreverent, funny, intelligent, and confrontational (in the most charming way). He spoke so highly of you, his family, and I enjoyed seeing his posts about visiting with you. The way he spoke about his family made his affection and love, well...obvious.

I am so sad that he is gone. At the same time, it is so heartening to see how many people he touched.

Please know that the sympathies of many people around the world are with you right now.

I was Nate's MVP Lead at Microsoft. Such a tragic loss. All of us at the MVP Award Program know Nate not just for his technical expertise and passion for helping others, but he had such an infectious smile and sense of humor. My deepest sympathy goes to his family during this most difficult time. Nate will be greatly missed.

Dear Oliver and Litt families: I can't tell you how sorry I am for your loss. I had the great fortune to get to know Nate through the MVP program at Microsoft, and he was always such a pleasure--invariably helpful, highly intelligent, and so, so, so funny! When I think of him now, despite these sad circumstances, I can't help but smile.

He spoke of you all so warmly and it was obvious to me how very close your family is.

I wish you all the best both now and in the future, and I hope you can take comfort in knowing just how many people Nate touched.

We will miss him.

Nate was such a kind and smart man and his love of football and always being up for a good debate is what kept us in communication over the last few years. His family can be very proud of the fine person he was. He never hesitated to help someone in need or just to offer a shoulder to cry on. I will miss you Nate. Skol Vikings!

Nate was a wonderful guy and wise beyond his years. I am much better off for having the opportunity to know him (as are the thousands of people he helped during his short time here). I will miss him at the Microsoft MVP Summit, as will all of his friends there. Thanks Nate, and Rest in Peace.

To the Oliver Family,
I have many memories of Nathan from when we attended Rosedale Junior High together. I remember coming over to your house after school and making Kraft Dinner with Nathan so many times. Ski trips, golfing and chasing the girls were many of our extra curricular activities we enjoyed doing together. He was a great friend to me and I pray God's comfort to your heart during this time of sorrow.

My good friend and Excel MVP Nate Oliver was a smart, funny, and warm guy who never hesitated to help those who asked -- and when he sensed it, to help those who didn't ask.

Nate touched countless thousands of people's lives by generously sharing his knowledge and expertise in Microsoft Excel, other Microsoft and non- Microsoft applications, and his brilliant programming skills. But more than that, he was a genuine humanitarian and truly one of the good guys in our community.

Nate will be sadly missed by his own family, and also by the global technology family of which he was so valuable a part.

Words cannot convey the sincere and heartfelt sympathy I feel for each one of you. I wish there was some way to ease the pain you are feeling now and pray that the memories you have will help you in the days to come.

Nate was a wonderful person who I will remember for his amazing intellect, fun sense of humor, and most sincere friendship. I feel blessed to have been fortunate enough to know him and have the honor of calling him a friend.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

With love,
