Ned Bechthold Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 11 to May 13, 2014.
Bechthold, Ned Walter Surrounded by his family, Ned took the highway to heaven on May 9, 2014, at the age of 77. Beloved husband of Helen for 54 years. Proud father of Lynn (Chuck) Barney, Kurt (Lori), David (Marie-Pierre), and Chuck (Heather) and devoted, fun-loving grandfather to Nick, Claudia, Hayley, Jack, Hunter, Peter, Gretchen, Ellie, Mark, Andrew, Helen, and Henry. Dear brother of Ellen Bechthold and Nancy Dewey. Ned will be lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, other family, friends, colleagues and his Yorkie, "Lucy Girl". His devotion to his children and grandchildren was tireless. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a great role model. Ned truly enjoyed the beauty and serenity of the northwoods. His lifelong friendships in Florence, Wisconsin held a special place in his heart. Born on January 12, 1937, he graduated from Wauwatosa High School in 1955 and the University of Wisconsin - Madison, School of Engineering in 1959. Ned was a commissioned Officer in the US Army Core of Engineers after graduation. Ned was the Chairman Emeritus of Payne & Dolan, Zenith Tech, Northeast Asphalt and Construction Resources Management, companies that build roads and bridges throughout Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan. Ned lived by a simple set of rules; God, family, and work. He was a man of great faith and a member of Fox Point Lutheran Church. Ned had a deep-rooted passion for Milwaukee's underserved communities and central city churches. He was actively involved in Boys & Girls Clubs, Junior Achievement of Wisconsin, Next Door, Sharp Literacy, PAVE (Partners Advancing Values in Education) among others. Ned served on numerous boards including Marquette University, Siebert Lutheran Foundation, The Greater Milwaukee Foundation, Bradley Sports Center and Chairman of St. Lukes Hospital, Milwaukee. Ned also received an honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Wisconsin and many business and civic awards. Visitation will be held Friday, May 16, at Fox Point Lutheran Church, Fox Point (7510 Santa Monica Blvd.) from 3 to 7 PM. A celebration of Ned's life will take place on Saturday, May 17 at 11:00 AM, at the Church of Gesu, Milwaukee (1145 W. Wisconsin Ave) with Rev. Frederick Zagone, S.J. and Rev. William Knapp of Fox Point Lutheran Church officiating. A reception will follow the service. The Marquette University parking lot F, at 12th and Wells St. will be available. There also will be valet parking. If desired, memorials in Ned's memory may be given to Fox Point Lutheran Church Central City Outreach Programs (7510 Santa Monica Blvd. Fox Point, WI 53217), Medical College of Wisconsin-Department of Neurology (8701 N. Watertown Plank Rd., Milwaukee, WI 53226) or the Florence County Library (400 Olive Ave., Florence, WI 54121). Ned saw his entire organization as part of his extended family. His success in business and life was based on the simple tenant of being a servant for good.

My sincere condolences to the Bechthold family
Ned will truly be missed, he was not only a mentor to my success as a business owner but a great friend whom has always been there for myself as well as my business. I would not be in the position I am in business or life if it wasn't for him. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing but I know he is in a better place and even though he is not a phone call away I believe he will continue to watch over all of us and make sure we are doing our best.
Again my my sincere condolences go out to the Bechthold family . May God continue to bless you and heal you through this trying time

Mr. Bechthold, as I referred to him growing up, will forever be an inspiration to me. As my Indian Scouts leader, he always provided thoughtful and enduring guidance. In my teenage years, I will never forget the time we were snowmobiling in the Uuupper, when he told to me to pull over as he wanted to get a picture of me next to a sign. The sign had one word, PARADISE. After taking the picture he said, “Schiedey, this is true paradise up here, of which many will never experience. Take it in and never forget about the true beauty that nature has to offer.” Mr. Bechthold also provided me summer jobs working for Zenith Tech, of which I learned a great deal…to appreciate hard work. That job financed my college degree. Thank you Ned!
My sincerest condolences to the entire Bechthold family.

I am so blessed to have known Ned. He was such a genuine, caring person and made a positive impact in the lives of so many people. He had a special way of remembering what was going on in the lives of the people he worked with and making a point to ask about it. I will always be grateful for his support, advice, encouragement, and the constant reminder to take one day at a time and keep my faith.

He will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Since I was a little girl riding from quarry to pit and project with my grandfather or father, the Bechthold name was never far from mention. It was always raised with kindness, respect, and reverence. It was mingled with words like honesty, hard work, integrity, and family. Ned followed Walter in personifying the Bechthold family and all it stands for. May God bless you all at this very difficult time and help you find peace as you carry on.

Men like Ned are the exception not the norm. The moment I met Ned as his nieces date to his son Kurt's wedding he made me feel like I was part of the family (as did the rest of the Black sisters and their families). Ned was one of the rare people that contributed so much, and took so little. His humility, intelligence, sense of humor, and honest caring for his fellow man was his trademark. I will miss him very much.

Our prayers go out to the immediate family that will miss his daily presence, and to the rest of us, who didn't see Ned that often, but were comforted knowing that he was with us.

Ned was one in a million and I'm lucky to have known him.
