Walter Neil Bauer, age 72 of Acton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at Massachusetts General Hospital with his loving family by his side following a courageous battle with leukemia. He was the beloved husband of Ricky Ann (Hofmann) Bauer. Along with his wife he is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Aufiero and husband Jeffrey, Valerie Bauer Gore and husband Jeffrey, all of Acton, his grandsons Matthew and Jake Aufiero, and Spencer, Hudson and Brody Gore. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Bauer of Minnesota, and his sisters Betty Wanczycki and Lucille Kelly, both of Pennsylvania. He was predeceased by his sisters, Jean Hallman and Shirley Ciraldo. Neil was born on August 3, 1946 in Allentown, PA, the son of the late Walter A. and Helen (Spaar) Bauer. Raised in rural Pennsburg, PA, he graduated from Allentown Central Catholic High School. He met his future wife and love of his life while attending the University of Dayton in Ohio. They married on May 4, 1968 at St. Regis Catholic Church in Birmingham, Michigan, the first couple to be married at this church. Upon graduating from the University of Dayton in 1968, he was commissioned into the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War in Korat, Thailand and Fort Dix, NJ. While stationed at Fort Dix, he began pursuing his MBA degree at Temple University, which he completed in 1974. Neil and Ricky settled in East Windsor, NJ in 1976 where they raised their daughters while Neil commuted to RCA in New York City. When RCA was acquired by GE, he worked at corporate headquarters in Rockefeller Center and subsequently transferred to GE Americom in Princeton, NJ. In 1993, Neil moved to McLean, VA to work for the first commercial satellite communications company, Orion Network Systems, where he became President and CEO. Neil led the company through an IPO and subsequent acquisition by Loral Space Systems. He worked at Loral Orion until his retirement in 2003. Neil and Ricky retired to Acton, MA to be closer to their daughters and five grandsons. Neil lived in the Robbins Brook community, where he joined the first Board of Trustees and served as President until his leukemia diagnosis in 2017. He guided the association through the building out of the community and the rewriting of the trust documents. His successful and rewarding career brought him all over the globe where he visited 70 countries and 47 states. His love for travel was always shared with his wife Ricky and they enjoyed many trips together. Family was the center of his life. He loved planning family vacations, reunions, road trips and their annual vacation to Aruba. He remained an avid Philadelphia sports fan throughout his life and was elated when the Eagles defeated the Patriots to win their first Super Bowl in 2018. Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Neil on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home, 347 King St., Littleton. Dear Ricky,
Yesterday I can across one of your Christmas cards with your four grandsons. Super. Last night I had a dream that Ken and I were caught in a rainstorm and we were lost. There was a line of people waiting and I saw Neil. He smiled at us and disappeared. I went on the internet and learned that Neil had passed. What a shock. We remember Brooktree and the fun there. The family parties in your backyard in East Windsor were fun as well. I remember the New Years Party in the Princeton Racket Club and Neil's injury to his nose and his visit to the hospital. How the patients and doctors reacted to his broken nose on New Years was something else, BUT Neil came back to the party. The photo In this obituary is of a smiling Neil Bauer. We will always remember him that way. May you and your family be blessed with so many wonderful memories. He was a blessing to your lives and you to his.
Fondly,

Martin Segal

Hello Ricky and family,

I was shocked to read of Neal's passing, because I was just hoping, as all you were, that he would make it through all the rigors of treatment and be well. I looked briefly at the video - it is just wonderful. What a great thing to do and done so well! I'm sure all Neil's friends will remember him for a very long time. My sympathies to you for your loss.

We have so many wonderful memories of fun times with you and Neil; pool parties, hot tub parties, seeing Neil Diamond in NYC, sitting in the stands keeping score for the swim team diver members, driving to diving meets all over the place, shopping the discount places, visiting you in Virginia, etc. We have been fortunate to be counted among your many friends. Our hearts and minds are with you now.

Ricky, Please accept my condolences on Neil's passing. Although I haven't seen either of you since your wedding, I did have a few brief e-mail exchanges with Neil. He was a great fraternity brother (we pledged together). Pat Talty

A wonderful man, my boss, mentor and friend has left us. Together we developed the Asia Pacific markets. We travelled throughout the region to China, India and other countries. Neil made it possible to launch Orion3 and moved me and my family to Singapore.
I was able to talk with Neil on the 26th of May. We shared the many memories and fun events from our days in Asia. I am very happy we were able to connect and saddened that just a few days later Neil wasn't with us anymore.
Neil will remain in my memory forever and always remind me how privileged I was to have had Neil as my boss.
Today my thoughts and prayers go out to Ricky and the entire family.

Our hearts are heavy for the entire Bauer and Gore families. Even though we never met Neil in person we felt we knew him because of the love Val and Jeff's three boys felt for their Grandad. I suspect there will be a huge void in the lives of many with his passing. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
