Nelda Scheremeta Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 1, 2025.
Nelda L. (Ninotti) Scheremeta, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully on January 8,2025 at Village Crest Nursing Home in New Milford, Connecticut, at the age of 103. She was known by Neal to her friends. Her husband, Dr. William Walter (Bill) Scheremeta, died in 1984 at their home in Sherman, CT.

Born in 1921 in the coal mining town Pittston, PA, Nelda was the daughter of Rose Ninotti Berti and Attilio Ninotti now deceased. Widowed with young children, Rose married widower Peter Berti, both deceased. Nelda's siblings, Robert Ninotti and Leo Berti, beloved to the family, are also deceased. A sister, Maria Ninotti, died as an infant, a sorrow shared by her family.

Nelda graduated from Pittston High School and went on to receive her Registered Nurse degree at Pittson Hospital School of Nursing in 1942.

Upon graduation, this young nurse left her small town to start her career in New York City. There she met her husband, Lt. Col. Bill Scheremeta, who was serving in the Army Medical Corp transporting troops. They married at St. Hedwig's Roman Catholic Church in Manhattan in February 1943.

After WWII ended, they lived near Brookly Naval Yard, Rego Park, and then in Stuyvesant Town in Manhattan. Dr. Bill had joined a medical practice located in Stuyvesant Town. They moved to Stuyvesant Town in 1948 with two young daughters, Corliss and Lois.

Neal served as his nurse for 30 years. Over the years, she and her husband built a house in the Holiday Point Community on Candlewood Lake in Sherman, CT mainly on weekends. Neal managed two households, an office, two children and then gave birth to a son, William, fortunately after the house was completed.

They retired to their Sherman home in the late 1970's. After her husband's death in 1984, she lived there until 2022 when she went to Village Crest having suffered a broken hip while sleeping.

Amazingly, she enjoyed living there. Her nursing, nurturing, and maternal talents blossomed again.

She helped to feed, encourage, and comfort her fellow patients. She continued to enjoy knitting, and having fun Recreation activities. Her family is grateful that her last years were so productive and satisfying.

She is survived by daughters, Corliss Ardussi, Litchfield CT, Lois Pitula, Stuyvesant Town, Manhattan, and son Bill Scheremeta, Bow Lake Village, NH. She has four grandchildren, Ryan Pitula, Jaclyn Pitula, Alex Ardussi and Will Ardussi. Her great-grandchildren are Alex's son, Zander Ardussi, and Ryan's son, William Pitula. Additionally, two nephews, Jeffrey Ninotti, son of her brother Bob and David Berti, son of her brother Leo, have also survived her.

A Funeral Mass and Ceremony will be scheduled for summer when weather and healthier conditions will allow family and friends to honor Neal and enjoy a family reunion.

I knew Mrs. Sheramita since 2008. I did some work for her and remained friends. She was such an inspiration. When I would visit her at Village Crest she still showed her love of life and for other people. She loved to talk about her family and always slipped my sons a dollar when I took them with me to visit her. I will miss her.

Nelda, what a beautiful soul. I am so grateful to have been lucky to provide care for Nelda the last few years at Village Crest. She was so full of life, helpful to all those around her, always singing, etc. She was truly the life of the party; everyone loved and now misses her presence. I am thankful for all the memories I have with her and I give you my condolences during this time of healing

Nelda will always be a special person to me in my heart. I met Nelda at the Sherman Senior Center when she was in her 90's. we would go shopping together and also take drives places. in her late 90's we went to an off the road pumpkin patch and we picked pumpkins, also blueberries. She was a very thoughtful caring person with a great positive attitude. she loved doing crafts and always wanted to know how you were doing. Loved hearing all her stories about her past from childhood to adulthood. How her mom would make bread and soup from chicken feet. Nelda always put a smile on my face. we would sing and laugh a lot. Always in my heart.

Nelda was one of my favorite residents at village crest. She loved to tell me stories about her childhood and she could still tell me her old address in pitston right down to the zip code. She was so smart and loving. Nelda loved to sing with me and we always made up songs together. I will always remember her being a bright amazing woman and the hugs she gave me. She would always have me do a spin for her when she saw me every morning. I still sing her song for her every Friday during karaoke which is "New York New York" by frank Sinatra. We all tell her we miss her and we sing to the heavens in honor of our beautiful Nelda. Heaven is a lucky place to have such a great soul such as you Nelda. The impact you made on us will forever be there. We love you!!
