Nelson McLane Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 29, 2024.
Nelson "Dave" McLane born April 9, 1936, at home in Jeddo, Michigan. Parents Nelson and Ruth McLane. Graduated from Yale, Mi high school in 1954. Attended PHJC. Drafted in the US Army in 1955. Stationed at Fort Leonardwood, Missouri before being shipped to Korea. Was on the 38th parallel with 74th Combat Engineer Unit. He was a field communications specialist.

In 1956 he played on the Far East football team. The team traveled to Japan for a championship game and was victorious. Dave played on numerous fast pitch teams in Port Huron including Shoffner's and Mueller Brass. He played shortstop and 3rd base.

Dave served a four-year apprenticeship in tool and die at Mueller Brass. In 1973 he moved to Consumer's Power Marysville and retired from there in 1996.

Married Suellen Hoyt on January 25, 1964, in Port Huron.

He spent many summers up north at the family cottage. He enjoyed those times spent with family and friends. In 2004, they moved permanently to The Villages, Florida, but continued to summer in northern Michigan.

Dave's hobbies included sports of every kind. Whether a spectator or participant. In retirement he loved golf and played often. He especially enjoyed watching his children as they played their sports through Little League, high school, and college. Later he watched as the grandchildren participated in their sports.

Dave attended Live Oaks Community Church in Oxford, Florida.

Dave never met a stranger and had a real gift of gab as he enjoyed talking and listening to people wherever he went. He also loved his home in The Villages.

Dave and Sue reluctantly moved back to Michigan in 2022 to be closer to the family due to declining health. They have been living at Vista Grande Villas.

Dave entered Henry Ford Allegiance Hospice for a short stay before going home to be with Jesus on March 28th.

Survived by wife Suellen, daughter Heidi McLane, son and daughter-in-law Dr. Rod and Darcy McLane, grandchildren Morgan (Jeff) Parkinson, Madison (James)Irish, and Garrett (Hannah) McLane, sister Nancy (Gary) Kowalski, Algonac along with several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by sisters Gloria (Carl) Rohdenberg and Dorothy (Bob) Leahy.

Memorials can be made to The Soar House Jackson Michigan or Hope Endeavors Metamora Michigan.

A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Dave was one of the kindest man he always welcomed everyone and never had a bad word to say. The Lord will welcome Dave into the kingdom of heaven because he was a faithful servant. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

My first memory of Mr. McLane revolves around high school softball. I played for his daughter. I remember her parents coming to a game. I wanted to be impressive. So I was so excited when I came up to bat with bases loaded. I couldn't wait to smash a shot and clear the bases. Looked to his daughter in the coaches box just to be given the bunt sign. Smh. Said ran back to the dugout.. He said good bunt 16. Then it was off to Cascarellis for our first official meeting. Just a super nice man! Glad our paths crossed! Rest in Heaven.
