Nicholas Evan Conrad

AGE: 88 • Hockessin, DE, formerly of Cherry Hill

Long-time Cherry Hill resident Nicholas "Nick" Conrad, age 88, died peacefully in Hockessin, Delaware on March 14, 2016 after a short illness, with his loving wife, children, and grandchildren by his side. Nick was born on January 14, 1928 in West Collingswood Heights, New Jersey, as the youngest of 4 children of Andrew A. and Abigail (Martin) Conrad, where he grew up in the family home on Lincoln Avenue.

Upon his return from Guam after WWII, in June of 1951, he married his dear wife, Joyce Livingston. Nick was the long-time proprietor of Nick Conrad Construction Company, building many of the homes and stores throughout the greater Cherry Hill area. In 1959, Nick moved into the house that he built in what was an undeveloped area in the then-new Voken Tract sub-division of Cherry Hill. The home was then deep in the woods along the then-new gravel road called Winding Drive, where Nick went on raise his family, living there for 53 years until his move to Delaware in 2012. In his years in Cherry Hill, Nick was well-known to welcome neighbors, employees, kids, and friends of all walks to his home virtually any time of day or night, and he became a beloved icon in the Winding Drive community for his kindness and welcoming ways.

Nick enjoyed sailing in the Caribbean, skiing in the Poconos, and providing every type of fun he could for the many kids growing up in the neighborhood. In the 1970's, Nick built what was probably the first zip line in New Jersey in his backyard, among many other things he did for the neighborhood kids. He was a pilot, and owned and loved to fly his classic 1940's Aircoupe airplane throughout New Jersey for more than 40 years. In 1984, Nick and his son Barry opened the First Meineke Muffler franchise in Delaware, followed by many others they operated together for over 25 years. Throughout his later years, Nick's greatest joy came from the time he was able to spend with his grandchildren, and he was as big a part of their lives as they were to his.

Nick was preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Abigail, and by his three siblings, Elizabeth "Bib" (George) Olcott, Anthony (Kathrine) Conrad, and Mary (William) Lee. He is survived by his wife, Joyce (Livingston) Conrad of Hockessin Delaware, his three children, Debbie Conrad of Ventnor, Barry (Sheri) Conrad of Landenberg, PA, and Dawn (Chris) Rog of Rhinelander, WI, and grandchildren Zachary, Lucas, and Samuel Conrad and Danica Rog.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

To the Conrad clan,

Best sympathies to your family in Nick's passing. I'm so glad he had a long and hearty life. Our whole family (especially Bob) thought the world
of Nick and how he dealt with life's challenges. He gave me valuable advise when I started my own contracting business which I can never forget.
I still remember him wrestling with the Hooper's!
Nick will never be forgotten! A realman's man!

My deepest sympathy to the Conrad family on your loss. May you find comfort and hope from the God of love. ( John 3:16)

What we remember about Nick is his warm and hearty greeting any time we met him at Coffee Run.

Dear "Mr. Nick", as he was affectionally called in our home, is very missed by the Lincoln Family. We were lucky enough to call him our across-the-street-neighbor and good friend. He was a jolly spirit for sure. We have fond memories of Nick always in his yard, whether on his mower or working on his home. He took great pride in the home he built and raised his family in. We will miss his honest forthright spirit. With Nick, what you see is what you get. He was a kind, loving, generous, welcoming man. He and his wife were the first people we met in the Voken Tract. They instantly made us feel welcome. They were the heart and soul of the neighborhood for us. And very dear to our children who spent a lot of time on the Conrad tire swing, playing ball in their big open backyard, and enjoying parties and gatherings in their home. Nick was the first one to teach Spence piano. They just do not make them like Mr. Nick anymore. He was a special person, just as is his wife Joyce is. They had a wonderful, full and very special life.
Our hearts are very heavy. Our hugs are with the Conrad's today. A sad time for sure. Tho we were all truly blessed to share him. Much Love, Linda, Jeff, Spence and Scout xo

To Deb and family, sending my deepest sympathy. I remember how much we all appreciated your dad for keeping the boat in Ventnor running, Deb. Always respected him as a terrific dad... such a caring, reliable help to you in so many ways. Loved the airplane stories. And greasing the piling in Annapolis...best story ever! :) He was certainly an excellent role model. You not only are his splitting image, but continually exceed all expectations as a caring, reliable friend. They say our "dash" is what we do with our lives between birth & death... your dad made this world a better place with his, as you continue to do with yours. Love to you all.
