Nick GEORGAS Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from May 12 to May 14, 2015.

GEORGAS, Nick
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Nick Georgas, on Friday, May 8, 2015 at the age of 80. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Christina, and his children Konstantinos (Terry), Dimitrios, Sophia (Robert) and Evelyn (Vasilios). He is also survived by his precious grandchildren who brought him so much joy, Anastasia, Katerina, Georgios, Christina, Kyriaki and Hunter. He was predeceased by his parents Konstantinos and Sophia; brothers John and Theofanis; and brother-in-law George. He is survived by his remaining siblings Bill (Koula), Dimitrios, Niki and Georgia (Francesco); sisters-in-law Mando (Chris), Niki (George), Argiro and Kathy; and many nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends. Nick was born on January 27, 1935 in Nemea, Greece and arrived in Canada on June 15, 1957. He married his wife Christina in 1962 and had their four wonderful children of whom he was so very proud. Nick worked as a chef at various Vancouver hotels before opening his own restaurant, The Columbia, in 1970, and later known as Martini's Restaurant on Broadway. He retired in 1989 when his son Dimitrios took over the family business and is still fondly remembered by many staff members he considered his second family as "Mr G." Nick was an avid runner and completed his first Marathon before the age of 50. He went on to complete numerous marathons, half marathons and races all over the world, and was a run leader at the Downtown YMCA for many years. Nick also loved hiking the Grouse Grind and going to watch the Vancouver Canucks. He loved to travel and had visited many places, but he most of all loved visiting his first home, Greece. The family would like to thank the physicians, nurses and caregivers that cared for our father this past year, and our family and friends that offered us support and visited Dad which made him so happy. Prayers will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. at St. George's Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 4500 Arbutus Street, Vancouver and Funeral Service on Friday, May 15 at 11:00 a.m. at the same location. Father Constantinos Economos officiating. Burial to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Burnaby. Flowers graciously accepted and, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the YMCA of Greater Vancouver. Condolences and tributes may be made by visiting www.mountpleasantfuneral.com.

It's never easy to say 'goodbye' to anyone, but moreso someone like Nick, whose kindness, compassion, intelligence and quick wit were ever-present. His fun-loving nature and sense of humor were as much his calling cards as his decency and love of family. He leaves behind a rich legacy of success and accomplishment punctuated by the everlasting love his adoring wife, his terrific children and grandchildren. Nick was one of a kind, and will be rightly missed by all those who were blessed by his presence. May God keep his soul rested and provide his family comfort in knowing he is very much in a better place.
