Nick Mangold

Nicholas "Nick" Allan Mangold, one of the most respected centers in NFL history during his 11-year career with the New York Jets, passed away on October 25, 2025, of complications from chronic kidney disease at the age of 41.

Born on January 13, 1984, in Centerville, Ohio, Mangold grew up in the Dayton area and attended Archbishop Alter High School in Kettering, where he lettered in football, wrestling and track. He went on to attend Ohio State University, playing center for the Buckeyes from 2002–2005 and establishing himself as one of the nation's top offensive linemen.

In the 2006 NFL Draft, Mangold was selected in the first round, 29th overall, by the New York Jets. It was the beginning of an 11-year career spent entirely with the Jets, a rarity in modern professional sports. During his career, he earned seven Pro Bowl selections and was named First-Team All-Pro in 2009 and 2010.

On the field, Mangold was known for his exceptional durability, intelligence, leadership and technique. He anchored the Jets' offensive line through multiple playoff runs, including two appearances in the AFC Championship Game. His teammates and coaches cited him as the "heartbeat" of the line, and his impact went beyond statistics - he set the tone for discipline, preparation and team culture.

After retiring from the NFL, Mangold remained connected to the Jets and his community. He was inducted into the Jets' Ring of Honor in 2022.

Mangold recently revealed to the public that he had been living with chronic kidney disease - a genetic defect first diagnosed in 2006 - and that he was undergoing dialysis while seeking a kidney transplant. On October 14, 2025, he appealed to Jets fans for a kidney donor with type O blood, noting that no family member was able to donate. His death on October 25 was attributed to complications from his kidney disease.

Mangold is survived by his wife, Jennifer (née Richmond), his high school sweetheart whom he married in 2007, and their four children. He is also survived by his parents and three sisters.
