VESELINOVICH NICK

After many years of proudly beating the odds, Nick Veselinovich was called to the Lord on Wednesday, August 22 at the age of 84. Nick was living with his wife, Maria Reinsprecht Veselinovich, and his daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia and Michael Mabunay, in Sparta, NJ, at the time of his death. Nick was a survivor of two quadruple bypasses, colon cancer and congestive heart failure. His determination and strength to overcome all of these monumental diagnoses will serve as an inspiration to all who loved him. Nick was born in Duquesne, PA to parents Dan Veselinovich and Mary Sekerak; and was a loving brother to his sister, Dolores Veselinovich Dubois of West Mifflin, PA; and to his brother and sister, George Veselinovich and Dessie Veselinovich Stanich, both of whom lived in Downey, CA and preceded him in death. Nick served as a medic in the U.S. army in Korea during the Korean Conflict, where he earned the National Defense Service Medal and achieved the rank of Corporal. Nick married his loving and devoted wife, Maria, in 1956. As a testament to his determination and tenacity, Nick attended nine years of night school at what is now Carnegie Mellon University while working full time as a draftsman at United States Steel Corporation and supporting his young family. He graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, and his wife and children will never forget attending his commencement. Nick went on to earn his Professional Engineer license, and he worked for United States Steel Corporation until his retirement. After earning his degree, Nick lived with his family in North Huntingdon, PA, where he and his wife enjoyed hosting many dinner parties and picnics. Nick gained renown for barbequing Serbian style pig on a spit in his home-made outdoor brick oven. Nick was passionate about his Serbian heritage, and he was well-read on all things Serbian. He was a faithful follower of Christ, and an active member of St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church in Monroeville, PA, as well as the St. Nicholas Church Choir. Nick and his wife, Maria, retired to Sunset Beach, NC in 1996, where he pursued his other passion of fishing. Nick and Maria were members of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Myrtle Beach, SC. During their retirement years they created life-long memories with their grandchildren, Nick and Katy, by accompanying them as volunteers for many summers to St. Sava Camp in Shadeland, PA. Nick is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Maria; his daughter, Sylvia Mabunay, and son-in-law, Michael Mabunay; and his daughter, Maria Henry, and son-in-law, Will Henry; Nick is "Dedo" to his loving grandchildren, Nick (Jessica) Mabunay of Boston, MA, Katy Mabunay of Los Angeles, CA, and Jake Henry of Colorado Springs, CO; Nick is adoring great-grandfather to Grace and Connor Mabunay of Boston, MA. Nick would tell you that it was hard life, and also a really wonderful life. Friends welcome in ALFIERI FUNERAL HOME, INC., 201 Marguerite Ave., Wilmerding 412- 824-4332, on Sunday from 1:00 until 8:00 p.m. with a Pomen Service at 7:00 p.m. Services will be on Monday in St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church, Monroeville at 11:00 a.m. Nick will be laid to rest in Penn Lincoln Memorial Park, North Huntingdon, PA.
