I met Nigel when I was doing my PhD at Aston in the 1990s; then for the last time in the early 2000s when he needed an external PhD examiner. I was struck by his (lightly worn) erudition and humour. I was looking up one of his academic papers when I learnt "accidentally" that he had passed away. Auf wiedersehen Nigel!

So sad to hear the belated news of Professor Reeves' death this year. Together with Susanna Beer he tutored my BEd dissertation on Theodor Fontane's novels at Reading in 1971. In the course of many sessions at Susanna's house in Reading I came to know him & appreciate the breadth of his knowledge of German literature, his humour, patience & general humanity. He wore his learning lightly and made a lasting impression on me. Such a loss to German studies and academic life in general.
