Her influence in the 70s and 80s was phenomenal as an author and activist. She was just a different kind of talent that couldn´t be duplicated.

Condolences to the loved ones of Nikki Giovanni,
In some of her interviews Ms Giovanni described her poetry as a form of prayer.
Our prayer is that each of you will find endurance during the days ahead and comfort in your dear one´s words and comfort from the oldest book ever written which one of its writers wrote: "For because of him we have life and move and exist, even as some of your own poets have said, `For we are also his children.´"

Ms. Giovanni was a writer and a poet but so much more. Her writings are a part of black history, an integral part of the movements of the 60´s and 70´s. She wrote for everyone, young and old and we will all miss her. Deepest condolences to the Giovanni family, God be with you all as you mourn the loss of your beloved.

Nikki Giovanni was a very good friend of our family in Knoxville, TN.
She would come every summer and visit with her family , cousins, and my family. As she wrote in her poems there was always good food, country fun, and good old times spent with the family, friends, and church people and good old gospel music!!!
In addition, she was a great writer and poet, who was very passionate with the black movement and culture, and current events!
Nikki is leaving a great legacy and she has moved on to a better place.
May God bless, comfort and keep all family members and friends !

My sister Lorraine and I discovered Nikki in the late sixties, as high school students. In 2004, she came to our former school, and she read from her latest book, The Collected Poetry of Nikki Giovanni. How could she have known that we discovered her as students, in that very institution. Rest in the Lord, Nikki. And say hello to Lorraine for me, when you meet.
