Nina Franks Obituary

Published by Clovis News Journal and the Portales News-Tribune from Aug. 19 to Aug. 21, 2006.
Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Nina B. Livingston Franks, 93, of Aztec, N.M., a former resident of Portales, passed away on Monday, June 12, 2006, in Aztec. She was born in Wingate, Tex., on November 8, 1912, to James and Myrtle Livingston.
Nina came to New Mexico in a covered wagon and lived most of her life in Portales, where she graduated high school. She and her husband owned grocery stores in Fort Sumner and Portales for a number of years. She was a painter and an author after retiring from the grocery business. Her six inspirational books entitle "The Best To You" have touched hearts all over the globe. Her paintings hang in many banks and private collections throughout the southwest.
Nina loved her family and sang in the church choir. She was baptized in her teens and had a deep faith in God.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Omar Livingston; her husband, N.B. Franks; and a son, Delbert L. Franks.
Nina is survived by her daughter, Betty Polston Payne and husband, Paul; two grandsons, David L. Polston and Derald Polston and wife, Rene'; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 26, 2006, at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall in Portales with Dr. Don H. Wiley officiating.
Interment will be at Portales Cemetery.

I moved in next door to the Franks in August 1971 with two other men to start a campus ministry at ENMU with the Navigators, an international Christian Ministry. The Franks were great neighbors to us out-of-towners. She gave me the first two copies of her "The Best to You" which I still enjoy reading through and looking at her paintings. Wishing her entire family a very Blessed Christmas Season.

I worked part-time at Franks grocery while finishing up at ENMU in 1951. Franks was a real family grocery with all members of the family working there. But as well as N. B., Nina was always on the job, keepings things going. I must say that in all my 93 years I have never seen anyone else as devotedly efficient as a manager, but always cheerful and kind at the same time, as Nina Franks. I might add that the money I made at Franks helped my wife, the former Wanda Cummings, and me a great deal in my making it through a BA degree at ENMU and going on to an M. A. and PhD and a 50-year career of college teaching, mainly at Washington State University at Pullman. I have only fond memories of Nina B. as well as all the other Franks. A great bunch! Nice to be reminded of such a nice lady. I still look at the beautiful little books that I have. I read about Bettie (and David) passing away in the ENMU alumni magazine. Its sad to lose good friends. We loved being neighbors in Thoreau when Billy Roy and David Lee were in 6th grade. Rita and Darrel were not far behind.

Betty and Family, Your mother was such a good friend to my mother and aunt(Una Smith and Ola McCasland) and to my son Billy Roy when he visited David Lee at her home. I lost Mother and Daddy and my husband within 6 months in 2003. I have seen some of your mother's little books in mother's things. Sorry we didn't find out in time to attend the service.

Nina B was a kind, lovely lady who showed me friendship when I attended ENMU as a young girl. I send sympathy to the family...to Betty especially, and know that Nina B is remembered with fondness. ...with love, Vi

Working at Franks Grocery while at ENMU was one of the greatest experinces of my life. The kindness shown me by Nina B. and N. B. made everything seem like a family affair. A pleasant memory.
